[Sep/Oct 2019] SA transport observations

Post by jibb »

This should be a September post.
3 new Scanias being prepared for service at Mile End Depot
1045-- Bustech
R1184 and R1185 Scania O-Bahn Artics ( I imagine R indicates it can't be used on the O-Bahn)

R usually indicates its going to used on rail subs when required maybe mile end are getting some o bahn shifts when clarendon street etc close later this month?

These buses can't be used yet on the O-Bahn yet due to being fitted with incorrect axles-that is why they are based at Mile End.
Does that mean buses that would normally turn around at Clarendon Street now have to travel an extra 10 minutes to layover at Railway Terrace Mile End, then return to Currie Street?

This will require quite a few extra O-Bahn buses and will mean more fuel used-at considerable extra expense!

Just because buses are delivered to Mile End doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going to operate from there. Mile End might be fitting the ticketing equipment and then buses shifted to any other depot. Perhaps they’ll be at Mile End doing silver work until appropriate axles are fitted and then transferred to St Agnes, Port or Morphettville for track work.
And I don’t think Clarendon St is closing this month.

Can Port Depot squeeze in another bus?

Just saw 862 go past on a Blair Athol service from Adelaide. I thought it was withdrawn by now.

Have any of the current O'bahn equipped Scanias actually undergone modifications for track work at any point?

1908 retired, sitting on the fence line at Mile End. 423, looking immaculate, is its replacement.

Not Quite one bad thing I noticed the number plates have been applied over some of the signage.

There was a rumour last week that Scania Artics R806-R807-R808 would lose their "R" and become O-Bahn buses.
Looks like it is going to come to fruition as R806 was at Scania this morning with a new dome light.
R803-804-805 are also going to be prepared for O-Bahn use.

Interesting to note, that will make nine extra artics on the O-Bahn including 1183, 1184 and 1185 assuming the later two are still going to be O-Bahn. Just out of interest will R803-R808 fleet numbers just become 803-808 or will they be changed to 1186-1191?

At the moment R1184 and R1185 will stay as R buses at Mile End.
It is believed that R803-R808 will be renumbered as 1843-1848 meaning when converted that will be 7 extra O-Bahn Artics. Not sure the reason for these additional buses on the O-Bahn?

Wouldn't it be more logical to number them 1186 to 1192? In theory, the 1800 range should have been used for almost everything in the 1900 range, with it continuing up to 1999, and then starting from 1020.

There are way too much unnecessary gaps and obscurities that are mainly as a result of privatisation, but also due to the STA numbering vehicles in random parts of the 1000 range, instead of making it near continuous.

1388's rear window was badly damaged last night during a scrape with a tree branch, as a result of the driver going in the wrong direction, and being forced to do a difficult 3 point turn.

2546 was reversed into by a van today at Stop 37C Montague Road, Ingle Farm. Was parked behind the 560 and not sure what the van driver was looking at but certainly not the bus with a blinking indicator! All appeared okay as it drove off shortly afterwards

I saw what I assume is a Volvo B10BLE on the dead track at Port weeks ago, numbered 1365. But I still haven't seen it in service, and it is not listed in the fleet lists. Has it been sold?

It's listed in the "to be delivered" section, it still hasn't been registered or used yet.
