Planned services for XPT replacement for Sydney-Dubbo

Post by DenisG »

Does anyone have any clues about the service the Transport Department plans for Sydney-Orange-Dubbo when the new regional fleet is introduced. It seems quite possible country people will miss out on a direct service with a likely two-car commuter running between Dubbo and Lithgow or Mt Victoria to feed the new electrics.

It has been announced that the new maintenance centre for the "new XPT" fleet will be at Dubbo, so I can't see them not running services there.

That's right Dubbo is getting the maintenance centre which was built into the tender for the new trains. But we're worried we won't get a seamless trip between Dubbo and Sydney with the new fleet but rather a feeder service via a new Xplorer or Endeavour to meet the new electrics at either Lithgow or Mt Victoria and change trains there. Transport for NSW or the minister won't say what's planned. An Orange rail group has also been active to get the Bathurst Bullet to overnight in Orange to give us a direct early morning service to Sydney but the government won't approve that either even though the Bullet after arriving in Bathurst is taken back to Lithgow to overnight before being brought back to Bathurst early morning for the trip back to Sydney. It's all a bit of a dog's breakfast.

Hard to guess at this stage what will happen.

There have been suggestions that there won't be loco hauled trains in the new lineup, it will be all DMUs. Time will tell.

But it wouldn't make sense to run a train empty to/from Sydney-Dubbo for servicing, or even only to/from Lithgow, when it could be carrying passengers all the way. Set rostering could be manipulated to ensure each set made it up there on a regular basis, and changed over for a fresh set.
