Post by jibb »

Following lots of complaints from commuters in the Athelstone area, the Council wants to revert to 1 operator for North -Eastern routes to avoid long transfer waits at Paradise Interchange in Peak Hours.

Paywalled site. Any other links available so as we can read the story without paying any money to Murdoch? Anyway it's not down to the company operating the service, it's down to crappy timetabling which AdMet/PTD is responsible for.

Fix our bus system:
Campbelltown Council calls on State Government to fix Paradise Interchange.

Northeast bus services need to be streamlined to create more direct journeys to the city and avoid long waits at the Paradise Interchange, Campbelltown Council says.
A council report released on April 3,says the State Government promise to build a $7.5 million 300-space carpark at the Interchange is "years off"-- but commuters are crying out for immediate relief.
Bus services across the district are run by two companies, which forces some buses to terminate at the Interchange instead of joining the O-Bahn and continuing to the City.
The council will ask the Transport Department to renegotiate bus contracts to create a "seamless service" for northeast residents.
More direct bus services would reduce the need for people to park at the overcrowded interchange, the council argues.
Mayor Simon Brewer said there used to be at least 2 services loping around Lower Athelstone that would go direct to town and back, plus a further service from Upper Athelstone.
That was removed when contracts were recast by the Government about 7 years ago, and put direct pressure on the Paradise Interchange for parking.
'The problem is coming home. You can get to Paradise Interchange easy enough, but the connectors particularly the 579 to Upper Athelstone, are almost non-existent--and Paradise is far from a comfortable place to be hanging around for up to 45 minutes.
Residents have also opted to park at Paradise Interchange for a quicker, more direct ride, creating further parking congestion.
O-Bahn services are provided by Light City Buses and Campbelltown services by Torrens Transit.
Elected members believe one contract for the entire district would allow for more direct buses to and from the City.
A Transport Department spokesman said bus contracts were under constant review and "focussed on continual improvement of services to the community".

Majority of Athelstone commuters would take roughly same time on either 178/178X , some also have access to 176.
All three above would take them to city (north terrace and king William street)
Next station is Victoria Square. Change here for all trains.

but what we want is a return to the good old days of the 576/577/179 for people up that way.I would know as I have a friend who lives on the existing 176/178 route path living up in athelstone and often her bus gets into town a little late she misses her connecting G10 to Panorama where we both work at the Bedford Group.what my idea would be is she gets a 576 or 577 depending on what path of the map she lives in is and allow say 15 minutes connecting time from getting off in grenfell st to get the connection from king william st onwards.on the inbound same formula with a decent connection.sure beats the commute to paradise after work on the g40 and waiting like forever for the connecting 178 or 579 home in their case.give the whole area to light city buses given it's closer for st agnes to provide them with buses for them than it is for say torrens transit mile end or camden park to do so.

What could work too is a service that follows the 178 from Paradise, heads down Gorge Rd and runs express down Lower North East Rd and Payneham Rd to the city.

Considering the traffic on Payneham Rd during peak hours; the O-Bahn is a much more attractive proposition.

i started thinking back to the days when they replaced the 176/177 with the 576/577 from 1995-2005 the switch to o'bahn knocked ten to twelve minutes off the overall travel time between athelstone and the city both ways.maybe a return to those days and the 179 becomes a city terminator.all 170 and 172 are fed from the 174 and the 171 switches to being run from king william st in town.
