SWISS-BASED consultants have recommended a proposed cable car from Elizabeth Quay should be extended to run through Kings Park.
The State Government-commissioned report proposes three “stations” in the park — at the Wadjuk carpark behind Fraser’s Restaurant, the DNA Tower and Synergy Parkland.
The cable-car concept was raised in 2014 when the Tourism Council said Perth desperately needed “a must-do tourism experience like climbing the Eiffel Tower, catching a Sydney ferry or riding the London Eye”.
At the time, planning minister John Day asked the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority to investigate the design, operation and costs of a cable car and advise the Government.
Switzerland’s Cable Car Consultants GmbH did a feasibility study but it was never released by the Barnett government because “it contains information that could be used to evaluate a future expression-of-interest proposal”.
The study found the proposed cable car was “well-positioned to capitalise on the growth and development of Perth”.
“This should be an attractive project to private capital markets,” it said.
The estimated cost of the project has been redacted in the FOI documents, but it is understood to be between $60 million and $80 million.

Planning Minister Rita Saffioti said: “If the private sector wants to submit a proposal for a cable car to Kings Park then we will look at it.”
The consultants said the original concept was for the cable car to simply connect Elizabeth Quay to Kings Park in a straight line.
“However, based on the site visit and consultations, the CCC team believed an expanded system could provide additional benefits by leveraging the natural features of Kings Park,” the report said.
It said an expanded system would:
Provide convenient, comfortable access throughout the park and not simply just to the “front” of Kings Park.
Help disperse visitors throughout the park.
Connect with the planned pedestrian bridge from the Perth Children’s Hospital.
Reduce car transport into the park.
The report said the system would be 3.18km long and require 19 towers, spaced between 100m and 280m apart.
