Silver Eagle 05 bus air assist power steering

Postby tedtor » Tue Aug 25, 2015 9:17 pm

Hi Bus experts
I have a Silver Eagle 05 bus that has been sitting for a number of years.
The air assist power steering is not working and leaking air out of the bottom of the steering column
I have manuals for the bus but they only show manual steering setup
I am any information, manuals etc on how the air assist power steering functions or where parts could be found if needed
Hoping someone can help
Ted

Googling should turn up some Eagle Owners forums in the USA
The Sydney Classic and Antique Truck (and Bus) Show
On again June 2020
@ The Museum of Fire.

Thanks for the replies
I have not been able to log on to busgreasemonkey; site keeps coming back and asking for invitation code
I looked up the Eagle Forums site; from what I can determine my Eagle 05 probably "Air o matic" power steering, looks like the company that made it went out of business some time ago
Still calling and researching to find more data

BGM has a rule where you have to make what they call an invitation post, telling the members something about yourself and vehicle, that gets approved and then you are good to go.
Good bunch of busnuts on there always willing to help, and as they are in the states, know where to look or go for xyz, whereas you or I will be just puddling around looking for ???? without that local knowledge.
Variety of makes among the owners there as well
When you go to the site, there is a line "how to sign up to the forum", just send Scott an email and you will be in

Most forums have a set up where you have to introduce yourself first. Thats a good thing for you so you can explain your situation to start with. Tell them what your vehicle is and tell them what you're doing. Just say you are looking for advice to get the most out of your vehicle. When you get the chance to post your main topic then you can go into great detail. Tell people you are in Australia so that means there are limited resources here for these vehicles. The main thing is you'll be surrounded by people who know what you've got and can help you. You might want to make some friends who will visit sometime.

Exactly as Busman says about Grease Monkey. Some of the nicest blokes you will ever come across. You will learn more about your bus than you want to know.

Sounds like all the orings are knackered in the control ring just under the steering wheel. Air O Matic were probably good when new and helped drivers turn in tight areas when there was previously no assistance and at least when they leaked it was easy to clean up the leaks!
The control ring normally exhausts air only about every 1/4 turn of the wheel. The air lines are then connected to a ram down on the Tie-Rod (mounted between the front axle and tie-Rod)
Remember these are just an assist ram and the air is slow to assist turning.
Who bleedin thanked me? I was just doin my job
