Employment with Public Transport in Adelaide

Post by Heardy_101 »

I am looking at applying for some PT jobs in Adelaide, eg Adelaide Metro, DPTI, Train or Tram driving, Bus Driving, you name it etc.

Where is the best and first place to start? I understand some of you work or have worked for the above, how did you go getting these jobs? Obviously one of the "easiest" ways would be to start from the bottom up.

With Bus Driving for example, do any of the companies train you to gain your heavy license or is that something you have to obtain in your own time?

Thanks in advance,
Cheers, Mitchell Heard

I can give you my experience for what it's worth. I organised my HR licence around a year ago in a one day course for around $1200. I then applied for and got my Large Passenger accreditation. Within days after I applied to the three Adelaide Metro contractors, I had a call from one of them and did an assessment drive a couple of days later. Got the call within the week with details for the starting date for the two weeks training.

I got through the training, but occasionally some don't. I looked at it this way... if I got the job after training, that was obviously the best outcome. If I didn't, at least the two weeks training paid the cost of getting my licence. If you have people skills, it's a fairly small gamble because you will probably get a chance with one of them sooner than later.

From what I've seen, if cost is a factor you may be able to get a Cert II in Driving Operations (MR and forklift) for free under the Skills for All program from places like Alan Miller, and then upgrade to a Cert III with HR for a smaller cost, but this is over a few weeks. There are probably others that provide this as well and I encourage others to post them (so that I'm not accused of being a spammer again!)

Thanks for that, I did notice that.

I have found employment elsewhere for the time being, but I plan to invest on getting a heavy license down the track.

Thanks to everyone/the people who pointed me in the right direction.

Perhaps this thread can be used to post links when operators in SA advertise for jobs.
