What are [Bots] and [Spiders]?

What are [Bots] and [Spiders]?

Not a new user, but viewing the 'Who is Online' section of the forum there are [Bot]s and [Spider]s. Who are they exactly and what is their purpose?
I'd post any important, bus-related links I had, but they're outdated anyways.
