This refers to Anzac Highway bus services.
Re: [Sep/Oct 2017] SA transport observations
We can't start the Sep/Oct observations without mentioning the annual Royal Adelaide Show. This event sees additional bus and train services to Adelaide Showground and existing bus, train and tram services in the area are busier than usual.
City to Showgrounds trains are operating at night and weekends to supplement timetabled services, and special animal sounds on validators at the Adelaide & Adelaide Showground platforms keep the kids entertained. Have you heard the noise it makes for a failed validation?!
In terms of extra bus services, 21W shuttles from the city to Showgrounds are in full swing, mostly rail sub artics seen thus far. 22W Show Express buses from Tea Tree Plaza continue to be popular with many O-Bahn artics making the journey from the Busway to the Showgrounds. Some O-Bahn rigid buses have been seen at quieter times as well.
Away from the Showgrounds a new temporary shuttle service between the old & new Royal Adelaide Hospitals, designated route 97A, is now in operation. This service will continue to operate a free loop service until the tramline to the East End opens before the State Election in March. Some O-Bahn and Hills services have been extended to the west end to service the new RAH.
Works on the O-Bahn tunnel are progressing well with the road surface over the tunnel now sealed and permanent line marking and centre medians being installed on Hackney Rd. The entrances to the tunnel at both the Hackney Rd and East Tce end are now receiving quite a bit of attention with new VMS signs in place on both approaches.

Re: [Sep/Oct 2017] SA transport observations
Has there been any retirements due to these deliveries?
Re: [Sep/Oct 2017] SA transport observations
Not at this stage-they appear to be extras.TA3001 wrote:Has there been any retirements due to these deliveries?
I have heard that extra buses will be needed when the O_Bahn tunnel opens, plus there has been talk of the Clarendon Street Terminus closing due to the fact that the Uni who own the site want to build on it. So a new home has to be found in the City or surrounds for buses to both turn around and also layover.
It has also been mentioned the current site used by Southlink to store buses during the day off Franklin Street is due to close some time later this year, so a new location will be needed for these buses.
Interesting times ahead.
Re: [Sep/Oct 2017] SA transport observations
Is it likely 441-445 will be retired before the end of the year or next year because of their '93 build date?

442 has already been retired. I heard that something was wrong with it, although I didn't hear exactly what it was.mmosca447 wrote:Is it likely 441-445 will be retired before the end of the year or next year because of their '93 build date?
Is there a reason why St. Agnes is not getting the new Scanias first?

I saw 441 on service earlier in the week. 445 has just left Arndale on a 253X to the city.

Is it a CB60 or different body style considering it came from Darwin?busrider wrote:Ex Darwinbus Scania L94UA #116 has arrived at Mile End depot today.

It's a Volgren CR224L, the same as 2801.

Re: [Sep/Oct 2017] SA transport observations
Well, I must say I'm glad to have found 116 when I visited the top end last in June. I do keep an eye on the tracking system up there - should be two shifts (mostly school runs with some other stuff tacked on) that regularly get artics both in the mornings and afternoons.
Only one artic (122) has been showing up lately, so I wondered whether something might be up.
I have to say though, the vehicles were practically never used. They have four artics and at most, two were going out of a day (sometimes one and often none). Maybe technical issues? Oh well. Looking forward to seeing photos. Hope Adelaide makes good use of them.
Must also add I spent a good two and a half months up in Darwin from November-February. 116 did not go out once in that time - and was moving between the depot workshop and and behind the workshop. 121 went out a bit here and there. 115 & 122 were the main two, but mostly didn't go out out at all during school vacs. My suspicion is Darwinbus (TerritoryTransit) are palming off an unreliable orphan from their fleet to an operator who has more knowledge of keeping them running.

Re: [Sep/Oct 2017] SA transport observations
DPTI are building a new Interpeak stabling facility on Railway Terrace Mile End opposite the Mile End Homemaker Centre. This will be used by Southlink and Light-City O-Bahn buses.
Southlink buses currently using Torrens Transit's Mile End Depot as well as the layover and stabling facility in Franklin Street will use this new location.

Re: [Sep/Oct 2017] SA transport observations
2 Torrens Transit buses collided on Norwood Parade this afternoon. Artic 1012 hit the back of Scania L94UB 1255 .Both vehicles suffered considerable damage. There were no reported injuries.(Channel 7 news footage).

Re: [Sep/Oct 2017] SA transport observations
That ain't good news. Don't these Scanias have brakes that allow one to stop on a dime?
How long are they expected to be out of service for?

Re: [Sep/Oct 2017] SA transport observations
Southlink only use Franklin St as a meal break location, not interpeak stabling.jibb wrote:DPTI are building a new Interpeak stabling facility on Railway Terrace Mile End opposite the Mile End Homemaker Centre. This will be used by Southlink and Light-City O-Bahn buses.

They will still have to use the new facility at Mile End once it opens later in the year, not Franklin Street.

That's if the operator responds in time...TA3001 wrote:That ain't good news. Don't these Scanias have brakes that allow one to stop on a dime?
Heavy vehicles take a certain distance to stop. Scanias may have better brakes than their older MAN counterparts but doesn't necessarily mean they can stop "on a dime". You also have to take into account passenger wellbeing. Would you rather have a bus pull up a couple of inches short or have half a bus load of people with serious injuries? Not saying you pick one over the other but you get what I mean.

Re: [Sep/Oct 2017] SA transport observations
Exactly. I've been on buses a couple of times when a driver has had to slam on the brakes, and on each occasion the driver had to check with all of the passengers to make sure they were okay afterwards. I overheard a lot of complaints from passengers both times, although they didn't actually say anything directly to the driver in either case. It's certainly a situation that should be avoided if possible, hence why I can only think of a small number of times when it happened.Eagle Eye wrote:That's if the operator responds in time...TA3001 wrote:That ain't good news. Re: [Sep/Oct 2017] SA transport observations
Another Scania artic has caught fire on West Tce this evening, the fleet number is unknown as yet, but it has a yellow front and a CB60 body of some sort, ruling out 2801, 3331 and all CB80 artics.
