Christchurch Transport Board AEC Swift 457

Post by LocoLes »

Way back in 1986 I photographed rare AEC Swift No.457 in the depot yard at Christchurch. It is pictured on a quiet Sunday morning fortunately parked at the end of a row of buses which was a good reason to take this photograph. Knowing how well our 'neighbours' in NZ preserve their buses maybe 457 was set aside for this purpose.

Edited by LocoLes 26Jan to erase reference to Adelaide chassis. the 'spare' chassis became AEC Swift 456 [see entry below].

The "Adelaide Chassis" was part of the large order for Swifts placed by Adelaide. They were AEC Swift 5P5R chassis with a 691 engine.

When craning it off the ship from the UK, chassis 5P5R / 887 slipped and fell to the wharf and was damaged. AEC replaced it for Adelaide order.
The damaged chassis was eventually repaired in Australia and then shipped to NZ as a Demonstrator, bodied at NZMB B43D and later became CTB 456 - not 457.

456 - rego FS9353 - was new to CTB in 1973 sold out of service as a "MoVan" in 1989, used in the South Island then ended up in a Dealers yard Whakatane where I bought it from.

l sold it to people in Gisborne. It still shows on CarJam last in 1999, with an incorrect new rego date of 29-Apr-1977.
It also shows Cancellation Date Of Registration: 29-Jul-2002

AEC then supplied 10 AEC Swift chassis of the 3MP2R type to NZ in 1976.
Eight of them had the larger 691 AEC engine, but didn't find NZ buyers and were re-exported to Austraila.

The other 2 were fitted with AEC 505 engines, bodied by Hawke B35D and became CTB Nos 457 and 458.
Neither now show on CarJam and I assume scrapped.....???

456 chassis originally had fitted a 691 engine, but CTB later replaced it with their common standard 505 engine.

So it appears that the bus in this photo is not built on the ex Adelaide chassis. I would like to confirm that before I change the information in the photo gallery.

See above....

457 is a later supplied new to NZ chassis - - Chassis No 3MP2R / 963. 458 was Chassis No 3MP2R / 964.

Not from me. Its all good.

The history of 456 is complicated and I did a lot of research when I bought her, but there are sites around dealing with it.
I assume that she's possibly still in existence somewhere. Most of the body was aluminium.

I later owned and operated ex CTB 608, the Bristol RE that was converted to a Coach with single door and a flat floor throughout.
That was last seen in Te Horo on SH1 north of Porirua and for sale on TradeMe minus all the seats..
