Volgren Twin Deck Coach photos.

Post by Denv12 »

I have changed the name of this topic to:Volgren Twin Deck Coach Photos.

As I had driven for Across Australia Coachlines in 1985-1986 I had driven both Volgren Twin Decks,#54 and #55 on express service. These coaches were very popular amoungst our passengers. From a passenger point of view they were comfortable. The staggered seating, raked floor without sunken aisle, downstairs toilet and great views made these coaches popular. As all the running gear was under the chassis and the luggage compartment above the chassis these coaches were extremely quiet as well as the Volvo engines werent noisey.

From a coach driver's point of view provided you didnt mind the 6 speed split gearbox these coaches were superior. Some guys preferred the crashbox of Dennings,Australs, etc.

They did have their faults though. The pipe between the top fuel tank(tank held 600 litres)and the botton fuel tank
(held 200)litres was a very small diameter pipe.It took time for fuel to run into the bottom tank. They should have had at least 1 larger pipe to speed up refuelling and to sneak in extra fuel.I spoke to Jim Harwood in 1986 about this.

The next fault was the fuel filler pipe pointing up hill.It should have pointed down.Fuel spilled out and down, usually on the driver. These coaches werent popular by a roadhouse in NSW because the fuel spill had to be cleaned up by whoever was working at the counter at that moment.

What years were these coaches made and what year did they cease production?

I wonder how many of these coaches are still in service.

You are welcome to contribute to this post with photos, information, etc.

Would like to see a variety of interior photos of the Twin deck coaches. The red interior was one that there seems to be a lot of.Then there were the Bender's.They had a green interior.

I just checked. That print is smaller than you think.I cant read it as its too small.Someone must know the dimensions of them.
I think they were 12.2m long x 4.2m high(to the top of the roof hatches) x 2.5m wide.I dont know what the wheelbase was. They must have been similar to the Denning Double Deck.

The technical image IS of a double deck, not a twin or Hi deck. The height one is of interest, I think 4.2 high is correct but wanted to check. Cheers for looking!
BTW the ringfeder on the top "stateliner" rig would make it illegally long............

The double deck was the little technical image I mentioned the basic measurement.
You could start a post on double deck coaches including Austral DD1,Landseer double deck,Volgren Double Deck, etc.Someone on this forum would have specifications to all of them.

I know the European builders had built a single axle version. I know that Custom Coach and PMC Adelaide both built single axle High Deck Volvo coaches (I was at PMC when it was built,it featured in January 1991 edition of "Truck & Bus" too)but I never saw or heard of a single axle Volgren Twin Deck, thats the one with the downstairs behind the rear axles.Do you have any photos of that single axle version? I think the weight factor of a single axle version might have got it banned.
