AF22 - Green Coach Lines #53

Earlier this month, I had the privilege of travelling to Melbourne on a beautifully restored Flxible Clipper. AF22 has been owned by the same couple for over 30yrs, however it's only been in the last 4yrs, that progress on restoration was carried out. Originally Pioneer Tours, it was then owned by Maxwell Coaches (Wilmot TAS) then an Ansett Airporter before being bought for $125. After buying a 1:76 scale model of the Green Coach Lines Clipper, the owners decided there wasn't a Tasmanian representation of the iconic Clipper in Australia, so the coach was painted in Green Coach Lines livery, and 2 days before our trip, was signwritten. Needless to say, the results were FANTASTIC. AF22 was also on display alongside other restored coaches at the HCVC Display @ Yarra Glen.

I had the pleasure of being a passenger in this vehicle when owned and driven by Bruce Maxwell. The trip went from Devonport to Cradle Mountain. Most memorable. Shame I don't have a photograph of it as was then.

Dennis Maxwell Big fellow and I reckon he'd still remember you. At 81yrs. his memory is still on the money and a fantastic travelling companion

I stand corrected. Sorry. In those days (1960 something) the road was dirt to the chalet. Dennis certainly got us there on time!

According to all the old timers involved with GCL, TCL, Sullivans, there was nothing on the road that would catch them. GCL would leave Hobart 1/2hr earlier, and would be rounded up before Launceston

You could say 48 was the Hobart to Launceston rocket all passengers please to make sure that you have your safety harness on as this coach is about do mach 2 to Launceston chunder bags provided.

Two stories received on hearsay many years ago about the Cummins when GCL owned them:
1.On a good day with the wind blowing from the north you could hear the Cummins departing the southern end of Campbell Town if you were in Ross,
2. One day departing Hobart via Elizabeth St, as the coach approached Bathurst St the lights changed to green, the driver planted the boot as you would, the revs built up for the next gear change as he went past Maples Furniture Store the supercharger was working exceptionally well evidently because the sound waves from the exhaust/engine blew the front windows completely out of the store.
Evidently not long after GCL management decided to remove the superchargers & make them normally aspirated. Even so they were still pretty potent to drive.
Sorry its diversifying from AF22 but the cummins were mentioned so couldnt help but tell those two small anecdotes, without starting a new thread.

Bedford-29.The clipper was - AF35 Pioneer No. D27, Grayhound No. 29 then TCL D63 & ended up in the bush at Bagdad
