Wells Waggons - Volvo B58 / PMC Executive
The Tasmanian Bus & Coach Society are excited to announce, that the Well's family (Wells Waggons - Smithton) have generously donated their Pride & Joy 'Tassie Bluebird" 1978 Volvo B58 / PMC Executive to the Society for preservation. This 38yr old coach is immaculate, with crushed velour seating, 5spd semi-auto box + Eaton 2spd diff. Beginning it's life with Smith's Coaches (Tom Smith) in 1978, it later passed to Lawrence Medwin (Medwin Coaches) whom transplanted the seating from his K113 / Apollo into this little baby. When Neville & Sadie Wells purchased the business from Laurie, 'Tassie Bluebird' came with the sale, and has remained 'pride of place' within the Wells Waggons fleet. Rather than see the coach SOLD and butchered into a motorhome, after tense negotiations, the Tasmanian Bus & Coach Society were entrusted to preserve this coach for generations to enjoy. The TBCS THANK the Wells family for their trust and opportunity to look after a truly TASMANIAN coach one that's spent it's entire working life IN Tasmania. Below are photos of the 'hand-over' with TBCS President Mark Dunsby. The coach has been registered on Club Registration (appropriately VC-1978), and will be displayed at official TBCS events.

That would have been "state of the art" 40 years ago.

"Tassie Bluebird" when in Medwin Coaches ownership. In 2003, the Volvo passed to Wells Waggons, along with Medwin's business.
Volvo B58 / PMC Executive "Tassie Bluebird" when quite NEW with Smiths Coaches (Sth Riana) Livery has changed very little, since new.

Certainly a nice looking bus, and hopefully a pleasure to drive too. Can't brush aside the fact that it has a lot of chrome bits, reminds me of the states a bit!

Congratulations to the Society on the acquisition of another truly Tasmanian coach. Its lovely to see a (son of) Moonraker preserved, on a decent chassis.

A lot of thanks must go to YOU mrobsessed Luckily, things fell into place, but you played an important role. Thanks againmrobsessed wrote:Congratulations to the Society on the acquisition of another truly Tasmanian coach. Its lovely to see a (son of) Moonraker preserved, on a decent chassis.
I sort of agree with you CCCC, it would be nice, however, if you go to that extent, you'd need to repaint the bottom blue again, and how far do you go chrome wheel trims It looks fine the way it is, and only through the old photos, no-one would have known about the chrome lower panels. More importantly, through the generosity of Merseylink Coaches, the minor rust issue around the tail-lights is fixed, and the coach looks AMAZING. It will be on display at it's 1st official event, Nov.6 "Festival of Wheels" in Hobart, so everyone can see how immaculate this vehicle really isCCCC wrote:Definitely needs the lower chrome reinstalled.

Those 'tense' negotiations certainly were rewarded, well done all. I managed to photograph the Volvo on two occasions, in action in Launceston and again while parked at West Park, Burnie alongside a Crawn's Motors coach.
