Tasmanian Steam
As promised in my previous post 'Good old Days' here are some more Tasmanian locomotives. I will post some more here over the next few days.
The first 2 pics were taken at Deloraine during the 1971 'Centenary Celebrations' where the engines received some 'refreshments'.
Cheers.

Yes I did get some pics of H5 at Hillwood on 2 occasions before it was shipped to it's new home at the DVR for restoration. It looked a little unloved in the first photo but things have improved somewhat since. Wonder how it is proceeding in the DVR workshops! Thanks for your kind remarks Vern.
The other locomotive [H6] is in a playground at Perth.
Enjoy these, Loco Les.

Thanks very much for the photos LocoLes, H6 must be one of the last remaining locos still in a public park apart from the E class at Deloraine

Sorry for the stupid question, but does Tasmania actually have any railways? It's just that in the photo section you are all like, "whoa, nice photo of that train, you don't see them very often".

Re: Tasmanian Steam
Tassie does have a few railway lines, but most of the ones still in commercial service are freight only-last passenger trains in Tassie on a regular basis ran nearly 40 years ago.Lt. Re: Tasmanian Steam
Depends how you define "regular" and "commercial". If defined as daily scheduled Govt passenger services on the main network, yes, the last was in 1978, but regular tourist train services on the main network ran until 2005 and "commercial regularly scheduled" passenger services still run on the West Coast Wilderness Railway between Queenstown & Strahan. Other tourist train services run on the Don River Railway and at least three narrow gauge (2 ft.) lines also regularly run passenger services.crazyturbo76 wrote: Tassie does have a few railway lines, but most of the ones still in commercial service are freight only-last passenger trains in Tassie on a regular basis ran nearly 40 years ago.

Re: Tasmanian Steam
I was referring to when the TGR/AN Tasrail stopped running normal passenger services on the main network.
I still don't understand why they couldn't have kept most of the ex-TGR Hobart suburban passenger network-could have come in handy with any future urban sprawls across the island state. That and a rail network could be a pretty effective way to link Hobart with Launy and other parts of the state. Metro's bus network can only cover so much of Tasmania.
Must have just been either the ideology of whoever headed AN back then, or the fact that everything was gradually being transported on Tassie's roads, rather than its rails.

Re: Tasmanian Steam
The Hobart suburban passenger network was canned by the State Govt in 1974 well before the advent of A.N. The populace had expanded well away from the suburban lines and the growth of car ownership had put a severe dent in commuter usage - especially in respect to the factory workers trains. Additionally, the railcar fleet was old and in need of replacement. The whole system needed complete renewal and the State Govt decided against it. Ironically, these days, the growth in housing back towards the suburban lines in the Austins Ferry / Granton areas (where previously there was just farmland) and gradual decline of inner city industry (likely to be replaced with new housing) in the Moonah / Derwent Park area and increasing congestion of the Brooker Highway, is renewing the viability of a Hobart suburban system, hence the agitating by the Hobart Northern Suburbs Rail Action Group.crazyturbo76 wrote:I was referring to when the TGR/AN Tasrail stopped running normal passenger services on the main network.

The Hobart - Launceston - Wynyard service (Tasman Limited) and Parattah railcar did last to A.N. days (1978) and yes, A.N. was principally a freight operator, however the ongoing improvements of the Midlands and Bass Highways had long overwhelmed the practicality and thus viability of the remaining passenger services. That remains the case today. Until the main South Line is re-routed off the slow and tortuous Brighton - Antill Ponds section to a more direct and faster route via Elderslie / Hunting Ground / Apsley / Lower Marshes, rail passenger transport (as transport) will remain unviable, with only tourist excursions being practical (in that there is no need for patrons to get from "A" to "B" in a timely fashion)

Here are 3 additional photographs of Derwent Valley Railway Vulcan H2 4-8-2 [ex TGR] operating a Derwent Park to Bushy Park rail excursion in 1987. Regretfully, almost 30 years since, these days are now just fond memories.
