Bus Enthusiasts Tour - Hobart

Post by Tas Bus Nut »

Hello everyone. Firstly I would like to thank all those who attended our tour yesterday (Sun.19th) here in Hobart. We had a good turn out for our first ever tour, and especially thank the attendance of mainland enthusiasts. It appeared everyone had an enjoyable time, with the main feature of a ride in the original MTT Leyland National (#601)being the most popular attraction. I must also thank Mr Tony Sim (CEO Metro) for giving up his time to escort us around Metro Depot and his wealth of information. Also Mr Peter O'Driscoll for his tour of his facilities, and Mr Doug Wisby for allowing us access to ALL his vehicles to conclude the tour. A short but enjoyable ride was also had on Mr John Gregory's Red Decker Co's 1961 Leyland Atlantean double decker, with the expertise of Ivan Jones (stan butler) behind the wheel. He certainly looked the part dressed in an OLD MTT uniform. But a special thanks must go to Mr Phil Lang & Mr David Batchelor from the Tasmanian Transport Museum, for allowing us USE of the Leyland National to transport tour guests to the TTM from Tolosa Park where we had lunch. Over the next few weeks, I assume(hope) fellow board members will share some of the MANY photos that they took on the tour, so I leave you with this group photo that my son took of us all with the Leyland National behind us.
On a personal note, I would also like to thank my son Brodie and my wife Angela for organising/cooking our BBQ lunch while we were enjoying the sights, and to system improver, who through NO fault of his own was unfortunately unable to commence the tour till after lunch and helped with the BBQ too. THANK YOU!!

What a great day neil, even I was surpised when you said the leyland national was coming out... took me back to where it all started for me, thanks to Neil (tas bus nut), adam (highway traveller) for all the efforts put in, although orignally my idea the boy of you put in alot of the behind the scenes work to make this happen. I hope everyone had a great day and enjoyed the sights of hobart and our sights. and another special thanks to my pop (dave jenkins) who helped me on friday clean bus 144 up she did look great.

One again thanks to all mainland participants, hopefully next year we can see launceston!!!

thanks again neil!

Excellent to see a decent turnout! Sounds like the tour went exceptionally well, and a ride on a Leyland National  I'm jealous, ha ha.
I wish I would have been able to attend; I definately must attend the next tour.
Looking forward to more photos from the tour :D

Yes a big thank you to all, certainly up the standard of a tour.

Jetstar was at it's best again on Sunday evening and again this morning.

Hopefully those from the mainland returning tonight and tomorrow have a better run with Jetstar.

The tour was well planned and the surprises keep coming, well done fellas.

Hopefully see you in Launceston next year.

Thanks Richard. Got you confused. Great to meet not only a fellow enthusiast, but one of my eBay buyers. Cheers.

Yes, I arrived at Tulla in plenty of time for the 7am flight only to be informed that "due to technical difficulties" the Jetstar flight was cancelled and they would see whether I could be put on the next flight. Fortuitously, we all got on board the 8.4Oam Qantas flight! But while the day began badly (from my point of view), things only got better and better.

It was a perfect day in Hobart, in all respects. As mentioned previously, the organisation has "upped the ante" in terms of tour organisation. A few things stood out. First, the level of local cooperation from so many, speaks volumes for the generosity of spirit that seemed to underline the whole day, and was also testament to the high regard that the organisers must be held within the bus community in Tasmania. Second, the number of participants from other states indicated that people will respond to the efforts of those who organise such events. Finally and most importantly, the camaraderie shown amongst participants gave that something special to the day, as it does on all such tours. Continuous laughter seemed to fill the spaces as we drove from one venue to another, especially from the back of the bus!

To Neil, James and Adam, and all the others who contributed to such a wonderful day, thank you so much.

As ive never been on an enthusiasts tour before I had no idea what to expect!
When dad dropped me off at Springfield I could see 2 other members (Lindsay & Industry..... i think may be wrong??)
I walked over and did not know what to expect, i said good morning and we instantly started chatting, Stan Butler soon joined us and also started in on the conversation!
Neil then popped his head out to tell us the driver was nowhere to be seen HAHAHAHA!!!

But anyway once at Hobart Depot and the rest boarded it again was a vibrant & friendly environment!!
I swear I have been out with 'Friends' and had much much much LESS fun, The day was awesome... Wonderful organization, Wonderful buses, Wonderful People!
The Day was simply unreal! I also really enjoyed meeting up with Colin Hardman again after he was my daily driver with Hobart Coaches for many Years! Also Enjoyed having Past & Current Metro drivers there to talk about the bad and the good that metro have done over the years, in my opinion the worst thing they did was......... KILL HOBART COACHES!

So I knew before the day had started it would either be the 'slowest day ever' or 'go to fast' and boy it was too fast!!!
My rating of the day was 10/10! Hats of to you organisers!!

Thanks again guys for a truly wonderful experience, as I've already indicated in the original thread in the states area. For those who were troubled by the Jetsar timings, the 7AM flight ex Melbourne was still showing as due at 11AM on the arrivals board at Hobart Airport at 4.30PM when 1whoknows and myself were about to join our flight! Also the Melbourne flight at 7.20(or thereabouts)was showing as departing at 2100 - as per Sunday night!
It does appear the only downer for the whole weekend was the performace of Jetstar. Like everyone else I am hoping to be able to attend the Launceston tour next year if it all comes into place.
yolo seems to be a bit of a trend!

To all the organisers, Tony Sims (C.E.O Metro), Peter O'Driscoll (O'Driscoll Coaches), Doug Wiseby, Thankyou for a very enjoyable day. The Leyland National certainly brought back memories of my early days as a young driver at Metro.
Also a special thanks to the Glenorchy Transport Museum and all the interstate visitors who took the time to travel down to Tassie. :D

Guess who Neil. Sorry I missed the tour. It looks like great fun but I have really enjoyed going through all the photos. Well done to all those that put them up.
