Perth visit part 2

Post by boronia »

Took a train ride on the Joondalup line, which terminated at Whitfords. Decided to go for a walk around while waiting for the next train to go further.

Not only is the station built in the middle of a motorway, but a very practical bus interchange has been built on top of it.

There is room for about 8 stands directly over the platforms

There was a layover area for about 4-6 buses here:

I managed to capture this line up of three different Volgren styles

I believe there are other stations on the line with similar facilities.

LOVE that shot of the 3 Volgrens. Thanks for sharing, it's nice to see something other than Customs.

Ha, I was just standing there to take a photo of the two buses when the third one went past; didn't realise what I got till much later.

If you ever want to see a practical interchange, Kelmscott on the Armadale line is by far the best. A maximum of five steps between train and bus.

That is, if you have a ticket. If you have a smartrider, it's a mad dash for the machine, then to the bus.

Cheers!

The thing about this is that the bus crossed the Northbound track on the Armadale Line. You can alight either to Armadale or to Perth without having to tag on board when hopping on from Kelmscott Station after a bus trip.

No, Kelmscott isn't a 'transfer' station unlike Warwick/Whitfords (where you're already tagged on if you jump from bus to train). You are still required to tag off a bus, before tagging onto the train.

Not necessarily, OTR. You don't actually need to tag off the train before getting on the bus. The balance on the card won't be correct until the next day though.

It would seem that using a system like in Adelaide where you just tap on would be simpler. I understand that with different technology and fare structures it isn't always possible, but it certainly makes life easy.

That was where I did this process 2 years ago where after I get off a train at Warwick Station, I get on the 443 bus to Padbury. This automatically synthetic tags me on when hopping on the bus.

While tapping on only may be simpler, Adelaide doesn't have fare zones to contend with. Perth has nine fare zones to contend with; having a tap off ensures that the correct fare is charged - a win-win for both the passenger (they don't pay for more zones than they need to) and the government (reduces over-riding). There is an added benefit of better data collection, as it shows where people alight from the vehicle as well as where they board.
