Boeing 717, err, I mean McDonnell Douglas MD-95 for the win!

Basically just a heavily-upgraded Douglas DC-9-30 series. The 717 was let down by a host of factors, particularly Boeing buying out MD in the late 1990s due to their financial woes and trying not to market the 717, for fear of competition with the 737.
Most passengers would appreciate the aircraft for its 2x3 (or is it 3x2?) seating, and relative quietness throughout the aircraft due to rear-mounted engines.

Today the major operators of the type; Hawaiian, Qantas and Delta Airlines seem capable of getting into fist-fights over the few remaining examples they do not hold in their clutches.

The 717 probably had quite a niche market that the 737 couldn’t cover at the time, which is why Boeing didn’t market it anywhere near as much as the 737 range. Especially now that the 737 is the most popular aircraft in the world, it’s understandable as to why Boeing didn’t market the 717. I know that QantasLink are currently in the process of refurbishing their WA based 717-200 units so there’s definitely a need for them.

Great photos, The Inspector.

Cheers,
Mitch
