The MK VI was number 780, the regos (unlike in years gone past with the AT and ET series), did not match the bus numbers. It is on an interesting route (284) being one of the former routes for Rouch & Kennedy (90A) acquired in 1967. That explains its stop at Box Hill (now part of the mall).

Can anyone shed some light as to why the M&MTB buses often did not display route numbers, particularly when the photos show the existence of the route numbers box?

I know that the Mark III's only had spaces for two numbers, hence the permanent "2" on the header, but clearly the Mark VI had the capacity?

700419Su 330 Collins St (Melbourne, Vic.): M&MTB AEC Regal Mk III 434 replacing route 42 trams during track work. (Roderick Smith)
The whole streetscape is pure nostalgia: Hotel Australia, TAA & Qantas, typical cars of the era. The bus is advertising Lloyd Triestino 'Galileo' and 'Marconi'.

Pretty sure it was a union ban which prevented route numbers being displayed
