The 890 looked like it was infrequent route between Appin and Wollongong with only 3 direct services to Wollongong from Campbelltown on a school day and 4 services in the school holidays in both directions where the 887 has 9 services on the south bond run and 8 services on the north bound run on weekdays

The 890 was renumbered to the 887 several years back (so it's the same service being compared); before then 887 was used for the ones terminating in Appin.

In the days of the old 890 (and later 887) all/most of the buses still travelled via Bulli Pass and thus serviced the northern suburbs of Wollongong, with one or two 887X's going via Mount Ousley to get students to University of Wollongong quicker.

In 2012 the Bulli Pass runs were removed (with all buses going via Mount Ousley), generally described as part of a refocus on the 887's UoW connections: http://www.busaustralia.com/forum/viewt ... 5&p=801364

Campbelltown/Camden Councils more recently usually run (or at least ran) "beach bus" promotions on the 887 during the summer school holidays, where 12-18 year olds could travel to Wollongong Beach and back for free with vouchers from their local council with proof of living in the council area. Busways used to run extra services for this up to 2011 [in 2011 it was three on weekdays and one on weekends] but it seems with the upgrades to the service in 2012 they (and Busabout now) would just use the normal 887 bus schedule.

Buses terminating at Appin had the same route number as those to Wollongong. 887 used to Campbelltown-Rosemeadow.
