New PTV website

Post by PaxInfo »

The new PTV website, previously viewable in beta mode, is now live.

https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/

Vehicle location and the long-promised interactive map are proposed for the next few months. I wasn't able to find 'network changes' on the new site, though for now they are available on the 'classic' site at https://classic.ptv.vic.gov.au/getting- ... k-changes/

Good luck to anyone trying to make sense of Melbourne's bus services network because the local area maps have been removed from the new site.

The other thing that caught my eye are the PDF timetable downloads. Because every stop on the route is shown you get the ridiculous example of timetables such as tram route 86 which now runs to a massive 83 pages!

I submitted feedback on this while the site was under test but I am not holding my breath for it to be changed. By no means am I anti progress but I am struggling to see how the new site is an improvement on the old one.

And why does it have different timetables for Australia Day and Australia Day Holiday?

I much preferred the previous page from which you could select the timetable you wanted. The map takes up too much room on the page.

Australia day being Saturday will have the late night/night network times on it. Australia day holiday is a Monday with the Saturday timetable sans late night/night network services.

In addition routes like 681 & 682 which run on weekends but not public holidays won't have service on the Monday.

And yet another website has fallen victim to "mobile friendliness" by sticking it to the PC users. Who the fnuk thought it was the most awesome decision to make the website designed for an iPad? The PTV website looks like asre on 1920x1080. I never thought I would have to blacklist ptv.vic.gov.au and go back to hoarding paper timetables but once again the Victorian Government never fails when it comes to failing.

Edit: And of course the old timetable bookmarks no longer work either, that would be too useful. Might have to stick with the PDFs I hoarded until the timetables are updated (at least with buses they rarely ever change).

I have been doing further probing of the new and old PTV websites, especially with regards to the availability of local area network maps.

The important map index page that everyone needs is at https://classic.ptv.vic.gov.au/getting- ... cal-areas/ The problem is that it appears to be an orphan page - ie not linked from any other part of the website (new or 'classic'). So you need to do some sleuthing to find it.

That page has working links to some local area maps. Regional maps are claimed to be unavailable but if you search in Google you will find some hosted by PTV (eg a January 2018 map for Geelong).

A problem is that although there should be a link from https://classic.ptv.vic.gov.au/getting-around/maps/ what's there doesn't get you to the above page (the hyperlink is missing 'classic'). Instead there's a redirect to the home page of the new PTV site which doesn't help with maps. So the really important page is not linked and never found.

The take home message is to visit https://classic.ptv.vic.gov.au/getting- ... cal-areas/ and save as many pdf maps as possible in case they disappear. Do it now. Today. Don't delay. They mightn't be there tomorrow. For regional try a Google search in case you find maps that PTV hosts but doesn't link to (like Geelong's).

It is a shame that what I thought was a good website has been dumbed down to suit mobile phone users who probably just want to know how to get from A to B & what time their next service is.

The downloadable PDF timetables are ridiculous. Because every individual stop on a route is shown you end up with nonsense such as the route 86 tram timetable having 67 pages!

I shall continue to use the old, or classic as it is being called, website until it is eventually discontinued. In the meantime the new site requires a lot of wotk to bring it up to scratch.

Some good news with the new PTV website, the local area & regional maps are back.

Still no provision for service updates, not that there have been any lately, & the super sized downloadable bus & tram timetables are yet to be fixed.

There are service updates but they're incredibly hard to find so they might as well be missing.

I found them last week then forgot when they were.

Tried again this morning but failed.

Had something to eat, came back, searched on a keyword from an article on the old website, then reverse engineered to find it.

1. Scroll right to the bottom where the fine print is
2. Click improvements and projects to get https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/footer/about ... -projects/
3. Selected bus & coach to get https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/footer/about ... and-coach/
