PTV wrote:Warrnambool line and Apollo Bay coach adjustments

From 28 January, the Warrnambool line timetable will be adjusted between Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool to reflect the new speed limits and journey time, following the successful upgrade of 22 level crossings.

From 3 February, the Saturday and Sunday evening coach between Geelong and Apollo Bay will be re-routed to reflect changes to the road network. The timetable will also be adjusted to connect with the 7pm train from Melbourne.
The weekend evening trips will now serve the Geelong CBD before the station, as per other trips.

From the Ventura website, regarding service changes next month following the completion of the long-talked about upgrade to interchange facilities at Huntingdale.
Ventura Bus wrote:Huntingdale Railway Station
Sunday 18th February 2018

The modernisation of Huntingdale Railway Station commences and the following services will be updated.

Route 704 East Clayton to Oakleigh
Additional service time added to accommodate newly developed Huntingdale Railways Station.

Route 900 Smart Bus Rowville to Caulfield
Frequency increase from every 15 minutes to every 10 minutes.
Additional service time added to accommodate entry and exit to the newly developed Huntingdale Railway Station).
The frequency upgrade only relates to peak times. Offpeak remains every 15 mins, not harmonised with trains; weekend remains half-hourly.

An extra 900 stop will be finally added at Haverbrack Dr, greatly improving access to the limited stops service for this part of Wheelers Hill & Mulgrave

CDCM's 601 shuttle between Huntingdale & Monash Uni will now operate every 8 mins on non-university days (was 12 mins). Likewise, an 8 min service will operate in the early evening.

The Saturday frequency for 630 (Elwood - Monash Uni) will now be every 30 mins across the day, rather than ~25 mins in the morning & 40 mins in the afternoon.

Kind Regards

Still no news on Route 828 upgrades which are long overdue on weekends especially? Also be nice if Route 841 was every 20 minutes on weekday peak as it can be justified even if every second service was shortworking Cranbourne to Narre Warren Station

No start date forthcoming for the 40 min Saturday service for 828 bus which has previously appeared on the PTV website a couple of times in error.

I'd think a 20 min service could be justified along the entire length of 841 at peak times. Only running a higher service along half the route could potentially cause a service downgrade to Narre Warren North passengers.

The service level provided on the 841 being a cross-suburban link is quite lacking compared to multiple local routes in the current Cranbourne network that now run every 20 minutes all day long.

I think I've already posted this here before, probably 10 years ago, but the northern end of the 841 could become quite useful if the route was extended from Narre Warren North to Endeavour Hills, abolishing the very sparse 842 service.

Infact I'd even suggest going one step further and sending the route west along Heatherton Road to Noble Park station, which would shave probably 15 minutes off the journey time toward the city for Endeavour Hills residents compared to going via Dandenong on the current routes

That is exactly what I would do with that route,Broadguage.I reckon given an adequate frequency(20 mins) that would be a good solid loading route.

From PTV:
Better bus services on the way for Wallan
Added: 23 January 2018
Bus services in and around Wallan will be expanded and upgraded, with new routes, more services on Saturdays and longer service hours during the week.
Public Transport Victoria (PTV) announced from 30 April 2018, two new town bus routes and a new shuttle service will be created to serve passengers in growing areas of Wallan.
The new Wallan Station to Wallan Central service will maintain key connections provided by current services, including to Wallan Town Centre.
The new Wallan Station to Springridge service will travel north along High Street towards Springridge, boosting coverage for people living and working in western and northern Wallan.
Both new services will run from Monday to Saturday, giving Wallan residents a weekend town bus for the first time.
A new shuttle bus between the Wallara Waters estate and Wallan Station will connect weekday passengers to trains in the morning and evening.
Services on all three routes will be timed to connect with trains at Wallan Station, making it easier for commuters to get to work, school or wherever else they need to go.
25 new bus stops will be installed to give passengers convenient access to these services.
Executive Director of Network Service Delivery at Public Transport Victoria, Laura Lo Bianco-Smith, said the changes are in response to the needs of this growing community.
“It’s important that public transport grows with communities such as Wallan. These changes will deliver more buses, more often, to more parts of Wallan.”
The new services will be introduced on 30 April 2018. Timetables and maps will be available around a month earlier via the Network Changes section of the PTV website.

Half heard on the radio the other day was an interview with a guy about a new bus service from Donnybrook into Craigieburn. Its to do with some new estate out that way and mention was made of three AM trips into Craigieburn (presumably there are PM returns). I got the impression it may be run by/ on behalf of the developer rather than PTV at this stage. Sorry for so few details but I only heard the second half of the item. Over to the board sleuths.

Think you will find this is the service mentioned in Paxinfo post above.

Yes it definately appears to be a service to be run by Merrifield rather than contracted to PTV.

Whilst the 505 has only had minor timing changes and the small route change around the works, the 546 has had 15 minutes added to citybound trips in the direction of the peak, presumably to allow for the adverse traffic conditions and lack of bus priority. To counteract the added running times, there is also an extra bus provided in peak hour. Hopefully this should alleviate some of the ludicrous late running.

To add a fourth bus to the very poor performing 546(in reliabilty and most importantly passenger numbers)is in my humble opinion a very poor use of resources.
A far better option is to start the bus off at the Royal Melbourne Hospital via the Melbourne Uni and finish at Clifton Hill Station. You could use three of those four buses to provide a frequent 15 minute service that would present a very attractive service that would generate really good patronage and provide a very viable cross suburban.Thats where the real potential is.
And use the fourth bus to provide an hourly service from Clifton Hill to Heidelberg with a small bus.The patronage on this section is just so low, that it only warrants a coverage service.By timetabling it correctly in the peak direction you could operate it reliably for the small pax numbers on that section.

I wonder whatever happened to the proposal to run a "uni express" style service from Clifton Hill to Parkville more or less along the same route as the 546? I could see a benefit to doing this in that it would necessitate bus priority which the 546 could use without requiring extended running times, the fourth bus could go towards seeding this service (obviously along with more resources), and the service could be the precursor to building up patronage in preparation for building the South Morang line to Parkville / Southern Cross / Fishermans Bend / Newport tunnel. This would be in line with your idea above, whilst retaining existing resources for a half hourly 546. I don't believe the 546 is an inherent waste of a bus service to be honest. It is interesting that until 1991 there was a Saturday morning service, and until 1993 the peak hour service was every 20 minutes or better. I wonder whether the lack of patronage led to the cuts, or whether the cuts led to people using the nearby train or driving instead?

With redevelopment and densification along the route, there is some potential to grow patronage if buses could run efficiently - on time and without extended running times. From memory, the Bus Reviews proposed running it along Westgarth and High St - this would also help by serving a greater catchment than Heidelberg Rd and assisting with timekeeping than sitting in the Heidelberg Rd traffic jam. I am also surprised there isn't greater use by Melbourne Uni students - I wonder if it's not as well known, or if it's lack of frequency means most would rather walk slightly further to the much more frequent 250/251? Maybe a concerted effort to run more frequent, and reliable, services between the Uni and Clifton Hill could kickstart a virtuous spiral that would benefit the whole route?

Or we could just band aid the current 546, that's cool too...

Not a bad idea. though such service would probably need 4 instead 3 buses in peak. Melbourne Uni to Clifton Hill takes up to 26 minutes with new running times.

While Bus Priority would mean less of a need for extended running times but you need to remember that extended running times are not just due to congestion issues and lack of bus priority but also changes to speed limits/intersections, etc. 546 before this had not run times changed for many years so these issues would of also contributed to the late running.

There is plenty of examples in past 5-10 years where congestion wasn't sole reason for extra running time needed with best example being old MBL run times where even on Sunday night buses could be up to 30 minutes late!

Many students currently use the 200/207 corridor along Johnston Street from Victoria Park Station to access the Hurstbridge/South Morang Lines. It is not uncommon to see 40-50 people waiting for buses in the morning peak at Victoria Park. Buses often have to leave people behind due to the poor reliability. A 546 shuttle would be very useful I suspect.

A local example is the 293 from Greensborough. It used to take consistently 3-4 minutes to get to Montmorency Secondary College at times of low traffic. With the reduced speed limits around Watermarc, and the added traffic lights, it now consistently takes 5-6 minutes - almost the entire run time allowed between Greensborough and the Montmorency shops! I suspect there may be a need to adjust this timetable in the future.

Here's an annoying peculiarity of Melbourne bus timetables.

From Frankston to Mornington, you can catch the 781, 784, 783, or 788, which usually comes to 4 buses an hour, which is pretty good, really. But the routes are quite confusing.

On the website there is a timetable which combines the times for the first three buses ( good ), but doesn't show the route numbers ( bad ). Users have to open about three browser windows and then try to correlate the bus route maps, with the streets listed on the timetable, most of which they have probably never heard of. And then open another browser window to check the actual street map. Becaiuse the different buses to Frankston run up and down opposite directions of the same street, in Mornington.

Where timetables are published in Sydney for locations where buses in a particular area or along a particular route use different route numbers, the actual route number is shown at the top of the table columns on each page of the timetable.

Some long overdue upgrades to the town buses in Wallan at the end of April:
  • Three routes replace the single service now
  • Route numbers not integrated into the metro numbering system unlike previous upgrades in Bacchus Marsh & Gisborne
  • An all-day hourly timetable operates on Routes 1 & 2 (currently outside the peaks there is only two token trips after lunch)
  • Route 3 to the Wallara Waters estate, south of the station, only runs in peak times.
  • Long gaps maintained during school peaks when presumably buses used on local school runs (not ideal for uni students or workers with later starts)
  • Evening services on Routes 1 & 2 extended from 8pm to 10:40pm weeknights
  • New Saturday & public holidays services on Routes 1 & 2, running 7am - 8pm
During the day & on Saturdays, a single bus operates across Routes 1 & 2. While this avoids long layovers, it does means only one route connects with each V/Line train, which is sure to draw some criticism.

Residents in the south-west pocket of town, off Taylors Lane, seem to been deemed too hard to properly serve for now. In fact, a few stops along the current town service are closing. Most homes in this part of Wallan are still within 1km of Route 1 though.

The low density sprawling Hidden Valley development also remains without a bus link to the station (an hourly peak service could be appropriate?)

I suspect the absence of a proof reader strikes again - I'm guessing the 4.55pm arrival on route 2 is probably unlikely to connect to the 4.17pm Vline departure, even with Vline reliability....
The 19:06 connection (0 minutes) off route 2 is a bit tight too given the need to cross to the city side platform (the car park / bus interchange is on the down side). Even the 16:44 on Saturday is a bit tight with a 2 minute allowance for the same reason.

I find it surprising that there aren't more trips on route 3 to Wallara Waters given it only travels 4 minutes to the end of Wallara Waters Dve and 4 minutes back. Putting all 3 timetables into an Excel spreadsheet, it looks like the more interesting point is not the one bus in the middle of the day, but that there are 3 buses each peak hour - effectively one for each route, with the two buses on routes 1 and 2 both operating until 11pm. Definitely a very generous provision for a small town, even allowing for the housing estates sprouting up. Good gig for the route 3 driver too with all that waiting time at the station...
