Christmas & New Year Timetables 2015-2016

Post by Craig »

Public Holiday timetables for the bus network applying on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Day have already surfaced on the PTV website.

A quick look through the usual suspects did not uncover any oddities or upgrades that have not surfaced earlier in the year.

I suspect PTV might not have double-checked their calendar yet though - Boxing Day falls on a Saturday this year. Usually this means a "Boxing Day" timetable is displayed as well as a "Boxing Day holiday" timetable - as seen when ANZAC day fell on a Saturday earlier in the year, there is even more inconsistency between bus operators, with some choosing to run a standard Saturday timetable on all routes with others only running 7-day-a-week runs (to a Saturday timetable). At the moment the website information suggests that only those 6-day-a-week routes that run on public holidays will be operating on the Saturday.

Summer timetables and New Years Eve information has not been provided at this early stage.

Kind Regards

Holiday timetables have now appeared online for Kastoria routes 475 (Moonee Ponds - East Kelior) & 501 (Moonee Ponds - Niddrie) applying 28/12/15 until 15/01/16.

Boxing Day holiday timetables are also now showing for the holiday on Monday 28/12.

I note that 170 & 180 are shown to be finishing at 9:30pm on Boxing Day despite falling on a Saturday. The full Saturday timetable (with late evening trips) is shown for 494 & 495 for Boxing Day, Boxing Day holiday & New Years Day, but the usual footnotes that they don't run on public holidays.

Looks like Night Coach won't start NYD for but the following day (with extra trains on many regional lines leaving BEFORE 12am), while confirmation that the Night Bus network will get underway in the early hours of NYD.

The tram information below needs to be tidied up - no information about frequencies on Thursday evening, trams on 30, 78 & 82 would likely finish at the normal Thursday time (not an hour earlier), and the information about service changes should continue under the 31 December 2015 heading. Furthermore, information about Flinders St shuttles is listed under "Swanston St trams" and then under 70 & 75 it has no mention of this shuttle.

Free travel on Christmas Day and New Year's Eve after 6pm

The Government will provide free public transport on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve across Victoria.

Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, announced today that passengers will not pay a cent to travel on Christmas Day or between 6pm on New Year’s Eve and 6am on New Year’s Day.

On New Year’s Eve, V/Line passengers will travel free on all services arriving in, or departing from, the city after 6pm and on the first timetabled service on each line leaving the City on New Year’s Day.

There will be no need for a myki during these times, and if passengers do accidentally touch on, they will not be charged.

Public Transport will run all night on New Year’s Eve, and will run all night on weekends throughout 2016 as part of the Government’s Night Network trial.

For timetables, and more information about Night Network, see Night Network or call 1800 800 007.

To plan your journey, use Journey planner.

Public transport is free from 6pm and running all night on New Year's Eve, and is still the best way to get around Melbourne to see the fireworks and welcome in the new year!

Metropolitan trains, trams, buses and regional town buses will be free from 6pm on New Year's Eve until the first scheduled service on New Year's Day.

V/Line travel will be free on services where touch on occurs after 6pm on New Year’s Eve. There is also free travel on the first V/Line service departing Melbourne to each regional destination on New Year’s Day.

Customers do not need to touch on their myki to travel. Metropolitan ticket barriers will be open at all stations. Customers who touch on their myki after 6pm will not be charged. If customers touch on before 6pm, they should make sure to touch off or they may be charged a default fare.

Services running all night
Metropolitan trains, trams* and buses will run all night to help you travel to your New Year's Eve event and back home again.

*Please note: Tram routes 30, 78, 82 will not operate all night, with services finishing 1 hour earlier than the Saturday timetable.

Plan ahead
  • Public Transport Victoria's call centre is open all night on New Year's Eve. For help planning your journey on the night, call 1800 800 007.
  • Please check the Live travel updates page for notification of any service changes that may affect your journey to and from the event.

It seems that PTV's comms department didn't bother to consult with bus operators before writing the misleading article below "All services will operate to a normal Saturday timetable, however some routes may have alterations." - that's a very poor way to say some Saturday routes simply won't run! There is a note elsewhere on their website that 561 will operate Boxing Day but not Boxing Day Holiday.

Plus, like NYD, there should be a long list of alterations to V/Line coaches.

Ventura is advising that all 6-day-a-week routes at Lilydale & Ivanhoe depots will be running on Boxing Day Saturday 26-12 but no service on Boxing Day Holiday Monday 28-12 or New Year's Day 1-1.

Image

I have tweeted Ventura to remind them that Area 4 should also be listed.

PTV is not showing these routes as running on 26-12 - this could well be a repeat of ANZAC day where some operators (Dysons, Ventura) ran all 6-day-a-week routes as the holiday fell on a Saturday but others such as CDCM and Ryans didn't.

From the CDC website:
CDC Victoria wrote: No Service on Route 601
Please note that there will be no 601 shuttle service between Huntingdale Station and Monash University, Clayton for 1 week after Christmas - effective Monday 28 Dec 2015 to Fri 1Jan 2016.

The 601 will resume shuttle service on Monday 4 January 2016.

We are sorry for any inconvenience and wish all our passengers a safe and enjoyable time over the festive holiday season.

Reduced Service on Route 605
Please note that Route 605 from Gardenvale to the city will run as a reduced service for 4 weeks after Christmas – effective from Mon 28 Dec 2015 to Fri 22 Jan 2016.

All bus trips to or from the city with a “H” listed on the timetable will not run during this time.

The 605 will resume normal service on Monday 25 January 2016.

We apologise for any inconvenience and wish you a safe and enjoyable time over the festive holiday season.
The online timetables for 601 & 605 currently do not show these reduced service levels (other than the trip footnotes in the 605 online timetable).

Ironic that the best 908 services to the city instead of being truncated to the park and ride are on new years day.
After 33 years of commuting by bus, I now have a Seniors Myki and two more hours a day not stuck in Victoria parade on a Transdev bus.

Online timetables on the PTV website now show the all night New Years Eve services for tram, train and extra evening V/Line services.

V/Line passengers on most lines will have to leave Melbourne before midnight - the only extra services that run are the Friday night extras, with Night Coach not starting until the following night.

Unfortunately for the train timetable, the New Years Day timetable is within a different date range than New Years Eve, meaning passengers will have to consult two different PDF files for travel after 2am. As expected, the pattern after 2am transitions into the usual Night Train timetable.

A few more Christmas Holiday timetables are also online:
605 - reduced peak service - 21 December to 22 January - curiously it is shown starting 21 December contrary to the advice on the CDCV website.
733 - reduced peak service - 21 December to 15 January
788 - boosted weekend timetable - 26 December to late January (Australia Day timetable not yet available to confirm end date)

On a related note, the 788 timetables continue to show the overnight shuttles that currently connect with the 970 at Mornington - these should be removed from timetables after 1 January. Although the 970 will continue to serve Rosebud, but without requiring a change of bus at Mornington, the pattern has also shifted (14 mins earlier towards Rosebud and 30 mins later towards Mornington).

Looking through the timetables, the 788 departing Frankston at 23:39 on Friday & Saturday evenings (connecting with a 970 at Mornington) appears to have been cancelled, as has the connecting bus beyond Mornington.

The 688 timetable is still showing the pre-midnight extension of a single 968 trip from Croydon to Belgrave via Montrose and Olinda (which then continues into Melbourne) - I'd assume this will be scrapped come 1 January.

Kind Regards

The Night Years Day morning timetables are now shown in the journey planner and online timetables - the Sunday morning service level will apply, meaning buses will continue to around 05:30 or 06:00.

Important to note Night Coach does not operate however, last trains on many regional lines between 23:30 & 23:50!

The PTV website is still not showing the NYE timetables for DART routes 905 to 908 which will run overnight. They are now online on the Transdev website however - http://www.transdevmelbourne.com.au/ind ... eturnid=21 and also in the Transdev Timetables drop-down menu.

Included are extra 907 shuttles between Doncaster Park+Ride and City, including before midnight (the usual 30 min headway would be inadequate). A source suggests that in-service trips have been rostered inbound overnight but these aren't shown on the PDFs provided.

Kind Regards

Re: Christmas & New Year Timetables 2015-2016

Post by Craig »

Put together this ultimate "unofficial" guide to bus services over Christmas & New Year, thanks to misinformation abounding on the PTV website (refer posts above).

I've rang operators of 6-day-a-week services to clarify timetables operating on Boxing Day Saturday, 26th December, as at the time of writing PTV was still not showing services operating in some cases on the online timetables.

In particular note that I was advised 490, 503, 506 or 512 WILL NOT be running on Boxing Day Saturday, whereas all other Saturday routes will, regardless if public holiday services normally operate or not. McKenzies advise 684 to Eildon will run to a Saturday timetable, but PTV wrongly showing a Public Holiday Timetable.

Gotta wonder, who is directing who?

Colour-code:
Green: Runs 7 days a week with standard public holiday pattern
Orange: Runs 7 days a week but with varying exceptions on public holidays
Blue: Runs 6 days a week and runs "Saturday" public holidays
Purple: Runs 6 days a week but not "Saturday" public holidays or has exceptions at certain times of year
Red: Weekdays only

EDIT: Colours are not appearing correctly in some browsers and operating systems  - if you can see most CDCM Sunshine depot routes as blue, it's not working - happy to repost screen shots if requested.

A look at the PTV website indicates incorrect details for over two dozen routes today, contrary to advice from operators either online, on social media or via phone call that buses are running due to Boxing Day falling on a Saturday this year. In one case would people get stranded at stops, but for the others buses may simply be running around carrying fresh air.

CDCM - 407, 414, 415 & 612 showing no service but running a Saturday TT; 170, 180 missing late night services & 605 showing a Sunday TT rather than a Saturday TT.

Cranbourne Transit - 799 showing no service but running a Saturday TT

Dysons / East West - 518, 536, 538, 558, 559, 561 & 565 showing no service but running a Saturday TT

McKenzies / Marytrs - 684 Eildon showing a public holiday TT but running a Saturday TT

Ventura - 526, 548, 549, 550, 671, 672, 676, 677, 681, 682, Area 1, Area 2, Area 3 & Area 4 showing no service but running a Saturday TT.

A holiday timetable has incorrectly been posted online for the Kastoria 476 (Moonee Ponds - Hillside) service, showing a 30 min all day service and 60 min evening service (as opposed to 20 min peak, 40 min interpeak/evening - some of the school trips are still displaying by accident.)

Kastoria has just confirmed over the phone that this is wrong and a normal school holiday roster is operating. PTV has been asked to take it down.

For those who are unaware the DART routes didn't follow the set timetable on NYE until about 2.00am. Instead outbound buses were dispatched depending on demand at the various Lonsdale St stops. After 2.00am buses then reverted back to running a set timetable.

Another version has since appeared showing buses operating as per a standard school holiday, however there are couple of errors with school day trips and variations still being shown. But at least not the totally misleading times shown earlier in the week.

The dates for 605 have since been adjusted to show the reduced timetable for 605 commencing on 29 December.

The 788 Australia Day timetable has now been uploaded, indicating a Summer Sat TT will apply. I have tweeted Ventura for clarification, as miscommunication between Ventura and PTV saw a normal Saturday TT operating, contrary to PTV website, and I was left waiting in Rye for over 40 mins for a 788 bus - thus making me late to a mate's BBQ.
