Even something like that would be better than nothing.

At least we get a transport link of which we so greatly need.

Maybe that platform could be dug out, put on a truck and taken to Southland, seeing as St Albans will be getting a new station soon with the level crossing removal. Oh wait, that's right, St Albans is a safe Labor seat so it never gets any budgetary goodies! http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/Roa ... Albans.htm

Given the frequency of service on the line this platform is probably quite adequate given that pax will be more or less even in both directions and the no commuter parking will mitigate against high am peak loads.

In case people aren't aware, PTV's got a new propaganda video up on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFt6cuDe9XI

At 2:15, you can see what some could consider an artist's impression. It's pretty accurate: a slap of asphalt, safety lines, a fence and a few trees if we're lucky.

Yep, that's what the PTV spends our money on - propaganda. I note that, despite this being the minimalist approach for a station reminiscent of the Bolte years, it still won't be open until sometime in 2016!

At least if it's minimal, there's less to demolish when it needs to be redeveloped later...

An underpass between the platforms to me seems a step backwards.

Why? Underpasses were built at Lynbrook and Cardinia Road and have become good features of the station.

The station proposal looks something like one of the old VR rail motor stopping places. Functional but few, if any, facilities.

While Westfield doesn't really contribute to the station itself, having actually seen the odd meeting between DoT and Westfield staff( I was not part of it, just happened to walk by the meeting room on the office floor), Westfield does have plans to deal with the connection between the station and the centre.

Consultation for the new station has now begun and will now include toilet facilities. Construction will begin later this year but now has an expected completion date of 2017.

Community Consultation Begins On Better Southland Station

Monday 02 March 2015

Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, has announced community consultation on Southland Station will begin in the coming weeks, and that the new station will include toilets for customers.

The Andrews Labor Government will include toilet facilities in the design after community dismay at the Southland Station proposal released by the former Liberal Government, which lacked basic facilities.

Southland is set to become the fourth busiest station on the Frankston line, moving up to 4,400 passengers a day.

The new station will provide direct and safe access to Southland shopping centre for shoppers and staff.

PTV is meeting directly with local residents this week and will host public consultation sessions on 19 and 21 March.

The feedback period will be open until mid-April and all comments received will be considered when the design of the new station is finalised in May 2015.

Major construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2015, with the new station to open in 2017.

Further information about the information sessions, and copies of the designs when released, will be available online at ptv.vic.gov.au/southland.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan

“The Andrews Labor Government will build a better Southland Station – with toilets.”

“The Liberals’ decision not to build toilets at Southland station was astonishing, given it will be used by more than 4,000 people a day.”

“We will consult closely with local residents and the community about the design of the new station.”

Meanwhile the former Coalition MP for Bentleigh posted the following today (on her account that still claims she is the MP).

"I am proud to have delivered $ for Southland Stn for Victorians in 2010 something Labor just talked about in 11yrs #springst"
https://twitter.com/EM_Bentleigh/status ... 7145363456

This of course follows the brochures sent out last year of her standing next to the railway track with a sign that said "Southland" and claiming the station was delivered.

Southland station was already built, somewhere between Box Hill and Blackburn. Why it ended up there is anyone's guess; no-one uses it because it's too far from the shopping centre.

Last week the artists impression for the station was released which can be viewed below:

http://ptv.vic.gov.au/assets/PTV/PTV%20 ... gn_web.pdf

http://ptv.vic.gov.au/assets/PTV/PTV%20 ... m1_web.pdf

http://ptv.vic.gov.au/assets/PTV/PTV%20 ... m2_web.pdf

Judging from the artists impressions alone it's not as basic as first thought. There's plenty of shelter on each platform, ramps for disabled access and as we already know, toilets. Looks pretty good for only $22 million, must have saved a fair bit by not having to worry about building a carpark. PTV purchased a house for sale on Tulip Grove to enable the land to be used during construction and to allow the underpass to be extended through to Tulip Grove at a later date. In my view it should be done from day one in order to maximize potential walk-up patronage from areas directly south of the station whilst allowing residents easy access to the shopping centre.

Despite having a predicted patronage of over 4,400 daily commuters I'm disappointed that it won't be premium status and the station should include provision for it later on. I'm also disappointed that it won't include a bus interchange. Yes many routes already intersect with Frankston line stations, but not all of them do. It wouldn't allow for easy transfer between modes and wouldn't allow for network reform in the future where buses may proceed directly to Southland station without having to unnecessarily deviate to other Frankston line stations.

Considering that the new Southland Station will become the 4th busiest station on the Frankston line (as claimed by the Government), it makes you wonder why there are no plans to staff it. Hmmmm......

It's fairly obvious why. That costs more money. :P

Victorian Government wrote: Expression Of Interest Released For Southland Station
Monday 25 May 2015

Expression of Interest (EOI) for the detailed design and construction of Southland Station has been released to market.

Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan, said the EOI was a major step forward in this critical project, which will provide thousands of passengers a direct link to the shopping centre for the first time.

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) is collating and analysing feedback received from residents and key stakeholders during community consultation held in recent months.

This feedback will be considered in the final design of the station, which will be developed by the contractor identified through the EOI process and released later this year.

Southland Station will be modern, safe and accessible for everyone with:
  • ramp and stair access to both platforms
  • a pedestrian underpass
  • a freestanding automated toilet
  • seating and shelter on the platforms
  • CCTV cameras
  • Protective Services Officer (PSO) facilities.
The EOI will be issued on Tenderlink and advertised for three weeks. Companies registered with Tenderlink are encouraged to submit their interest.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Public Transport, Jacinta Allan:
“We’re getting on with Southland Station, which will cater for thousands of passengers every day.”

“The Expression of Interest will give us the best contractor to design and build the new station, incorporating feedback from local residents, businesses and stakeholders.”

“Southland Station is a key part of the Andrews Labor Government’s plan for better public transport in Melbourne’s south east, including more trains, less level crossings and new and improved stations.”
Kind Regards

Craig :-)

Being built with only two tracks by the useless government which can focus only on the next election, and not the years thereafter. Yet again, the buzzword 'safety': it can justify anything.
Roderick.

Underpass dug in weekend work blitz at new station site.
Moorabbin Kingston Leader November 7, 2016.
MAJOR works on the long awaited new Southland station got underway on the weekend with crews building the underpass to connect the platforms.
A weekend blitz to get trenching done began late Friday night and construction teams worked through the night and into Saturday.
The new $21-million station is now in sight — more than five years after it was first promised. It will back onto 10 homes on Tulip Grove, Cheltenham sparking loss of privacy fears among some homeowners.
Last year the State Government said it would service up to 4,400 passengers per day and become the “fourth busiest station on the Frankston line.” It is expected to open in late 2017.
Bentleigh MP Nick Staikos (right) has a look over the site with Coleman rail construction manager Josh Thompson. Picture: Chris Eastman
Labor Member for Bentleigh Nick Staikos said the fact that work had now ramped up at the sight showed the government was “getting on with it.”
“We’re getting on with it — giving visitors direct access to the shopping centre, and locals direct access to their homes and businesses,” Mr Staikos said.
“We’re buying new trains, removing dangerous level crossings and building new stations to get people home safer and sooner.”
Station designs released in February showed ramp and stair access to both platforms, an automated toilet and pedestrian underpass.
The station has been dubbed a “destination station” and therefore PTV won’t provide commuter parking at the site.
This has concerned Kingston and Bayside councils who fear commuters will try to use surrounding streets to park and travel to the city.

Southland Station opens 26.11.17

Post by Roderick Smith »

Roderick.

Southland Station finally ready to open this Sunday.
Moorabbin Kingston Leader November 24, 2017.
•New Southland station in sight
•All aboard newest train station
•Southland works on Frankston line
•‘We had next to no sleep for two nights’
THE long-awaited Southland Station will open to its first trains and passengers on Sunday.
More than 350 people have worked more than 61,000 hours during the 15-month construction of the controversial $21 million stop on the Frankston line, moving about 600 tonnes of earth.
A pedestrian underpass will lead from the nearby Westfield shopping centre to the station.
Labor and the Coalition both pledged to build a train station at Southland and while the Coalition won the 2010 election, it wasn’t until 2013 that detail of the plans for a basic, no-frills station emerged and it took until 2014 for full funding to be provided.
In March 2015, the Labor government announced the long-awaited transport hub would be open a year later than previously planned.
MPs Nick Staikos and Tim Richardson take a sneak preview of the new station. Picture: Supplied Labor Member for Bentleigh Nick Staikos said the new station will make travelling to Southland easier for thousands of staff and shoppers every day.
“We promised a new station and we’ve delivered — right on time for the busy Christmas period,” he said.
But the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees union has planned a protest at the station against Westfield Southland’s decision to charge workers to park at the centre.
SDA State Secretary Michael Donovan said retail workers can’t afford the $1,300 a year and would be forced to find alternative parking arrangements.
“We have female shop assistants working at night who used to have safe, convenient parking at their workplace. Now, they will have to find parking in surrounding suburbs and that brings risks,” Mr Donovan said.
“I will be asking WorkSafe to look at issues like safe lighting, and other health and safety matters. I have already raised these issues with Westfield to no avail.”
Public Transport Victoria will host a free coffee and BBQ breakfast in the station forecourt to celebrate the opening on November 26 from 9.30am and 11.30am..
