NSW Railway Observations - November 2017

Post by Linto63 »

Noticed today's Indian Pacific was stabled at platforms 1 and 3 at Central rather than the normal platforms 2 and 3.

Extreme busyness observed all the way from the Harbour Bridge to Hornsby.

A large section of track was completely removed at Gordon.

Bustitution performance B, three out of 4 trips OK, the other was a bit of a nightmare.

Noted an 8-car C set headed south at St Leonards about 18:20, been a while since I last saw one away from T2/T3/T5.

Are there some legal reasons why they can't do that as a passenger service if they have to turn around in North Sydney anyway?

Passenger V set services on North Shore line to North Sydney has happened in the past few months on weekends on at least one occasion

V-sets have operated through the north shore line during trackwork numerous times in the past.

If it was 8V it runs out the City Circle to Commence from Central , as 8V can't fit on the Platform North Sydney.

IIRC, an 8V won't fit on the CC platforms either. That is why they have been terminating them at Blacktown recently.

When I got on the train behind it to go to Hornsby, I saw it parked up at North Sydney station. If they don't fit in the platform then must have been an empty non revenue service I guess.

On another note, set S107 replaced a Waratah on the 8-02am Berowra to Blacktown this morning. Only time in recent years I've ever seen an s-set north of Hornsby.

Interchange announcement for Sydenham has been changed on Waratahs.
It used to be:
Please change at Sydenham for T4 Illawara Line trains.
Now it is:
Change at Sydenham for T4 Illawara and Cronulla trains.

^ Same seen at Campsie, but the smaller sign is the same as the bigger one and that it tells you to check for new stopping patterns.

It's very inconsistent and random. Sometimes they run as passenger stopping at all stations, sometimes they run as passenger but express from Central to North Sydney, and sometimes they terminate at Central and run empty.

The Northern line was closed earlier today between Epping and Hornsby, due to a broken down freight train. In the past, Central Coast services would divert as passenger along the North Shore line. Stopping all stations to North Sydney, Chatswood, Hornsby then as timetabled. Today they are running empty on the North Shore Line from Central to Hornsby, and then picking up passengers at Hornsby. I don't understand why they would run empty on this occasion?

Yeah I found it bizarre. "customers are advised to catch a North Shore Line service to Hornsby and change to complete their journey".

Apparently other trains already with passengers were turned around north of Epping, sent back via ECRL to Chatswood then up to Hornsby that way.

Some citybound Central Coast services were terminated at Strathfield. Not sure what that achieved.

I would be sure a few trains which ran via Gordon were passenger from Central platform 16 but delayed up to an hour due to additional crews needed to be sourced to take from the yard and turn around at Macdonaldtown to get into platform 16 and then run via Gordon. It is better to get the passengers moving using existing services rather than clog Central up.

Good news now with ECRL that this diversion option is available, but no longer after Oct 2018. Trains would be stuck indefinitely.

Train held at Strathfield to form next service on time out of Central platform 16.

There are also some delays/cancellations today due to a system issue with Waratah trains. Some silver trains running instead where resources available.

Was wondering why there was an issue yesterday on the waratah not having an of the led matrix indicators working. Was this waratah issue related to a train that broke down at Bexley North causing major delays.
