Re: $1.7 billion order for new Waratah trains signed
They should store some in the defunct Redfern Suburban Car Workshops as back ups. It's quite a modern looking installation next to the rest of the 19th century buildings.
The S sets are a fundamentally modern train despite their age. You can't compare them to the far more archaic red rattlers of old. They have had a lot if money spent on them over the years and they run like new.
They should only scrap the remaining ones when they become too unserviceable. The air conditioning on some of the newer sets make you wish there were opening windows available!

That's what happened a few years back. Remember the line up out at Enfield yard.

In a "9 Exclusive" it was tonight reported that the Premier is about to sign off on ordering a further 17 Waratah trains.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
"Exclusive" on Ch 9 News tonight that Gladys will be ordering a further 17 B sets before the election.
Mention was made that these would have "track testing" technology to detect rail faults. Is this in existing B sets?

The continually delayed Tangara upgrade seems less and less likely.

B set version 1.1? Now with track testing technology?boronia wrote:"Exclusive" on Ch 9 News tonight that Gladys will be ordering a further 17 B sets before the election.

17 sets = 136 carriages. Not exactly 160 carriages to remove the K sets from service.

But the ISCARs will.
The K/C sets are probably less of a liability because they have a/c.
Maybe this new order will be D sets?

D sets apparently will be reserved for another type of rollingstock. Probably B+ set.boronia wrote:But the ISCARs will.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
I really hope its not more Waratahs. Enough is enough, we'd be talking about ordering a now +- decade old train. Which coincidentally in my own opinion, has the least amount of character and charm (and seat comfort), the variety in our fleet really would just be closing up more and more. Yes, A and B Sets are still the exact same train to me.
Why not try something new? Like with how the NIF is "new".

Re: $1.7 billion order for new Waratah trains signed
These 17 trains are likely being bought for service growth rather than fleet replacement. The fleet pre-B Set was being used at its maximum, and simply replacing the S's one for one with the B only marginally allows for growth when taking into account maintenance cycles.
Waratah Series 2 for S Set replacement;
Waratah Series 3 for growth;
OSCAR cascade as a 1:1 replacement of K/C;
The remainder of the B Set options for mid-2020's growth as the new T4 and T8 signalling and untangled City Circle come online;
2030's possible T Set replacement?

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
The cost of creating a new design is enormous. Especially if you are only ordering 17 sets. You still end up with a similar outcome in the interior.
The NGIFs will be more of the same, with a different interior.
Perhaps when the Ts come due for replacement, they might go to a new design.

Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
As the order is exercising an option within the existing Waratah contract to extend the order, they will be exactly the same as the 24 being delivered now.Jurassic_Joke wrote:I really hope its not more Waratahs.
Re: NSW Railway Observations 2019
Apart from the fact that it's "boring", it will do the job very well. It's now a well tested design, reliable, and plenty of spare parts going around if there was ever a need for some. Probably not bad value for taxpayer money either.Linto63 wrote:As the order is exercising an option within the existing Waratah contract to extend the order, they will be exactly the same as the 24 being delivered now.Jurassic_Joke wrote:I really hope its not more Waratahs.

Re: $1.7 billion order for new Waratah trains signed
The red rattlers were delivered for decades in different batches and the stainless steel sets were delivered for 14 years with some changes to the propulsion system and the addition of A/C and cosmetic add ons like the fronts of the C sets. V sets were delivered over the span of 20 years, albeit with a 7 year gap between the first batch and the second lot in 1977.

Re: $1.7 billion order for new Waratah trains signed
Remember part of this new standard Waratah design is to make the network less complicated. If the fleet consisted of only Waratah trains, including the new Intercity, then everything would just be easier than it is now. Drivers and guards wouldn't need to learn all these different trains, because they'd be basically the same.

Re: $1.7 billion order for new Waratah trains signed
I think 17 more Waratahs for growth is a sensible idea. Hopefully it will allow for some more flexibility to increase maintenance and replace trains that brake down.

From what I could see there’s 3 B’s at Cardiff, with only one in the B set livery.

But where can we vent all the extra trains because the stabling facilities are getting really full.J_Busworth wrote:I think 17 more Waratahs for growth is a sensible idea. Hopefully it will allow for some more flexibility to increase maintenance and replace trains that brake down.
I hope there will be a stabling facility somewhere on the Western Sydney Airport extension from Leppington, otherwise the lines will get full.
Would the 17 more trains be for the Western Sydney Airport Extension?

No, it's still unclear when that would be built, and they would be about 6 years too early in any case as the airport won't be finished until 2026.
Currently, the only line proposed to be built to WSA for opening day is the Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport from St Marys to the new city centre.
