Re: SYDNEY LIGHT RAIL MISHAP
Every country has it's specialties. Sydney's seems to be a reluctance to give way. I suspect we week see exactly what was in that footage repeated here.tonyp wrote:Poor drivers are universal worldwide.Swift wrote: The first one must be an Australian driver.

Re: SYDNEY LIGHT RAIL MISHAP
That's because the engineers have decided that a horn speaker playing a recording of a bell is easier to maintain than an actual real bell!Jurassic_Joke wrote:The Citadis X05 here has the same bell as the Inner West Urbos trams...which is then the same bell as Melbournes E Class. That bell sound, I am growing quite fond of it.tonyp wrote:Use of the bell is going to be very important.
There are even buses that use the SAME recording. They all probably use the same MP3 file they found on the Internet
Should sneak and replace the bell sound file with a recording of a German/East European 'clatter gong'. That will get some attention!.
I put this in the same 'pointless use of technology' bucket as replacing rearview mirrors with cameras. Replace a passive device with a complex electronic device. (Although the camera can be recorded unlike a mirror:-)

I'm the opposite I think it sounds atrocious. At least the electronic gong sounds like the traditional gongs of old.tonyp wrote: It drives me crazy - like Santa Claus or an ice cream truck on steroids! I prefer the European clatter gong
Re: Light rail gets the green light: stage 1 UNSW to CBD
The clatter gong is a traditional gong of old! Arguably it attracts attention better because it repeats, giving it a chance to register in the brain, unlike a single bell. It's like the difference between a short toot on the horn vs a long one. The first often doesn't register but a long blast certainly does. The Canberra light rail uses an electronic equivalent of a clatter gong. German operators!

What about the London Underground whistle?
That would adapt well to street use.

With all of the testing now happening, do we think it'll be ready by mid November for L2 to open to Randwick?

I read somewhere they have to get up 2,500 km on each tram before acceptance. That's a lot of trips on a short line. I don't think they will be rushing things, in view of Metro teething problems.

Even an emergency vehicle with siren blaring doesn't seem to register with pedestrians here. They will cross a road in front of one.tonyp wrote:The clatter gong is a traditional gong of old! Not to mention reverse buzzers. A waste of lungs some people.

Re: Light rail gets the green light: stage 1 UNSW to CBD
I used to drive coaches with loud reverse beepers. Sometimes while parked up in the city I would slip the box into reverse just to watch people's reaction. Most would not react at all, let alone look around, and it certainly didn't stop them from walking behind.
Beeper and reversing lights didn't stop motorists from pulling up close behind while I was moving back.

Re: Light rail gets the green light: stage 1 UNSW to CBD
Let me rephrase that; I meant the traditional SINGLE gongs of old that most Australian trams past and present use. I'm more just more familiar with it; clatter gongs don't sound right to me. My guess is with Sydney, they're gonna be using the horns a lot more than they do the gongs. If they were smart they would've installed railway diesel horns in the trams like we have done with some of the vehicles at Loftus, instead of using a digital recording of a car horn.tonyp wrote:The clatter gong is a traditional gong of old! Also, I received an update from the Sydney Light Rail PR team via Messenger regarding some questions I had regarding the application of the future "2200" tram numbering, as well as traffic light priority, which as we know, has been pretty piss poor so far. Their response:

Got a brochure in my letterbox today advising that testing will commence on the Kingsford branch on 9th October.

HI guys First post, I have been making a few youtube videos of the light rail tram testing some of you may find interesting, my latest one Part 5 was taken on Wednesday 2nd October. I managed to get some close up footage of the cab and the connecting hitch.

"Bi-lingual" signage for those who can't make up their mind what to call them.

^It feels like 1977 again except the cop cars aren't XC Falcons with an illuminated "police" sign on the roof.
Did I really hear a wolf whistle at the sight of the tram?
Someone's obsessed.
The most exciting thing was seeing the road surface fixed.

Fair enough. If think first runs are most at risk of derailment etc. Think they only used single sets on the other initial runs

Re: Light rail gets the green light: stage 1 UNSW to CBD
The "warnings" for the trials said trams would be running "very slowly" initially. But a poster on FB noticed them running at normal speeds. Perhaps there were multiple runs that night.

Re: Light rail gets the green light: stage 1 UNSW to CBD
Frequent testing has been expanded along George St in the last few days. An interesting video, showing what can happen at Grosvenor and Bridge, is at https://youtu.be/Oa20UR0GQv0. Unusually, both trams were ready and they got the white T simultaneously which won't always happen. And then the southbound tram got blocked by traffic and needed about 60 seconds to clear the intersection.
Re: Light rail gets the green light: stage 1 UNSW to CBD
Traffic looked like they were in the left lane.. looked more like a block of pedestrians were blocking the road ahead
