Saw a complaint on FB recently from a woman whose bus service to Epping only ran hourly, and that it was "deliberately timed to miss connections with the trains". There is a minimum of 20 trains per hour through Epping, so I don't know which connections she missed (other than possibly a down CCN service?)neilrex wrote:"no attempt to coordinate" is fine with me. Each system operates in its own silo, regardless of the convenience of passengers. It probably won't be such an issue when the metro is extended to the CBD.
It's the sinister malevolent schemes to coordinate as badly as possible, which annoy me.

2 stuff ups in the one day! One in morning peak and now one in afternoon peak. That's a new record.

Nothing unusual here for a new system and more attention needs to be given to what the "rail insider" is saying than the Chicken Little remarks from the opposition and RTBU. The most interesting information here is that it has already carried 5 million people in the first 2.5 months which places it somewhere well north of 20 million passengers per year. This must be vastly more than the entire regional bus system that it supplanted was carrying beforehand. One can only assume that all those extra riders have come from private cars, although it has probably pinched some from the Richmond line.

Sydney Metro plagued by 32 incidents in 81 days of operation

The Sydney Metro has been open for just 81 days yet the $7.3 billion driverless train system has already experienced 32 incidents — which equates to one issue every two and a half days.
Common problems include fire alarms triggering station evacuations, technical issues with doors, signal problems, train mechanical faults and lift outages.
A rail insider said conservative safety protocols were causing delays on the 36km railway line. One example includes train doors needing to be manually reset by staff if they are held open three times in a row by a passenger.
Sydney Metro operator Metro Trains Sydney confirmed this to The Daily Telegraph.
“Both the platform screen doors and the train doors are programmed to open and close three times if an obstruction is detected,” a MTS spokeswoman said.
“After the third cycle, the doors will remain open and need to be re-set by a Sydney Metro staff member.”

This morning, trains along the railway line from Tallawong to Chatswood were running at a reduced schedule.
Transport minister Andrew Constance said the cause of the issue was being investigated by MTS.
“One observation I’d make about the Metro is it’s now carried the population of Sydney in the short time it’s been running,” he said.
“It’s an excellent system because it recovers incredibly well (when there is an incident).
“There is no systemic issue but there are incidents occurring which do cause disruptions … we are now seeing the numbers almost pushing 80,000 passengers a day…we will learn from each of these incidents which are unrelated.”
According to Sydney Metro’s Twitter page, there have been 32 incidents since the railway line opened on May 26. The Metro has also been closed for two weekends for trackwork.
Opposition transport spokesman Chris Minns said these problems proved the Metro was in “utter chaos”.

“This is Sydney’s newest piece of transport infrastructure and it’s most unreliable,” he said.
“It’s clear that these are not just teething problems, these are fundamental problems with the roll out of this piece of infrastructure.”
Mr Minns said nine bus services along the Sydney Metro route had been cancelled by the government shortly after the railway line began operating — which has created problems for commuters whenever there are delays.
“Those bus services that were cancelled by (transport minister) Andrew Constance (should be) returned to the people of northwest Sydney,” he said.
A rail insider said while the Metro infrastructure itself was fine and operating successfully, the safety protocols and standard operating procedures still needed to be ironed out.
“There’s a steep learning curve, particularly around the operational procedures,” the rail insider said.
“They need to approach everything very conservatively and err on the side of caution.
Sydney's first driverless train had a malfunction on its first day of operation.
“Response times will eventually shrink once the operator has a full understanding of the severity of every incident, so for example, today’s issue would be much faster to fix next year once they have everything ironed out.”
Rail, Tram and Bus Union secretary Alex Claassens said the Metro had been “plagued” with incidents since it opened in May.
“We’re lucky we haven’t seen any major safety incidents as yet, but unfortunately the signs are very worrying,” he said.
“Commuters are being forced onto replacement buses, forced to endure long delays and left stranded in between stations. That’s simply not good enough on what is supposed to be a world-class system.
“Transport for NSW has overseen the axing of bus and other services, presumably in an attempt to drive people onto a privatised Metro service that breaks down every week or so.”

Perhaps there should be a new/repurposed thread for discussion of future metro lines? That way this thread will remain being just about the current line.

Thirsty desperate Sydney people craving good public transport options jumping at the chance when they actually get it -strike me pink how could that happen??

Oh, it's well too early for the public to start rioting. It's the Hills' first railway, and Mac Uni has a crapload of able-bodied millennials who only worry about seats because they're too lazy.tonyp wrote:Still waiting for the savage public reaction against the quantity and type of seating predicted by various Hanrahans.
Wait until the thing gets to Bankstown, THEN the seating complaints will roll in from the Bankstowners that have been downgraded from double-deck trains and the savage reactions shall start.

The upgrade from 4-6 tph (other than for Bankstown, Lakemba, Campsie at 10 tph) in the peaks to 15tph should help offset that.BanksfielderIdiot823 wrote: Wait until the thing gets to Bankstown, THEN the seating complaints will roll in from the Bankstowners that have been downgraded from double-deck trains and the savage reactions shall start.

If I may paraphrase your post to translate into seats per hour:moa999 wrote:

Indeed it more than offsets it for the majority of stations, plus a faster journey on top of that (thus less time standing if you do stand). I predict that, just like the NW and Perth, most people won't give a rats about the seats and most will probably get a seat anyway because in reality trains are rarely filled to capacity. The upgrade from 3,600-5,400 seats ph (other than for Bankstown, Lakemba, Campsie at 9,000 seats ph) in the peaks to 5,670 seats ph should help offset that.
Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
I catch the Bankstown line and the trains in the morning are not that packed (compared to the T1 and T4). A fair number of people get off at Sydenham as well (to interchange with T4) and I find some people from Marrickville onwards are happy to stand even when there's seats available. Having a more frequent train service would help spread the load as well (as people tend to bunch on certain trains - especially at the smaller stops which have less trains).

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
Which point of the morning though? And are you talking about that semi-express run or do you catch it from one of the Canterbury area stations? There are some times of both peaks where the trains get pretty crammed (though not as dangerously squashed as the West and Illawarra) and many times where there does happen to be a somewhat good deal of standing room.jaseee wrote:I catch the Bankstown line and the trains in the morning are not that packed (compared to the T1 and T4). Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
I wonder whether the government may need to announce the extension of Metro beyond in the next year or two.
Bankstown, as a station which only has 2 platforms and 1 small station concourse, unless there is expansion, there is not going to be sufficient space for interchanging services between Metro and Sydney Trains.
Also, the small station concourse would not be beneficial for an significantly increased number of passengers to use.
Yet the major challenge is after Bankstown, part of the line is shared with freight trains, would not be sufficient for smooth running of Metro.

I think we have been through most of this over the past couple of years, with all waiting to see what is going to happen such as extensions to Liverpool, etc.

Re: Sydney Metro - Tallawong to Bankstown
Had been some discussion given if you want to go straight to Liverpool you need to tunnel from that point anyway.
The question is how you do it without a lengthy shutdown - it's a pretty narrow corridoor.
That said the original EIS proposal was a poor design if you ultimately planned a Liverpool extension.
