MP slams NSW govt over sale of $186M worth of state assets

Newcastle MP Tim Crakanthorp slams NSW government over sale of $186M worth of state assets in Newcastle.

NEWCASTLE state MP Tim Crakanthorp has slammed the NSW government for selling what he claims is more than $186 million worth of state properties in the electorate over the past seven years.

Speaking outside the formerly government-owned Bull Street offices on Monday, Mr Crakanthorp released a list of 155 properties which have been sold by the government since it came to power in 2011.

A large majority of the list is social housing but also includes government offices, retail space and port land.

“The government is continuing to sell off Newcastle piece by piece to the highest bidder,” he said.

“The Liberals are addicted to flogging off publically owned assets. At the rate they’re going there will be nothing left.”

He said while some properties were transfers between departments, the lack of reinvestment in social housing was most concerning.

“They are selling off priceless social and public housing properties and not investing in the replacement of those lost,” he said.

“I spoke on this issue just two years ago when they sold off public housing on Light Street [Bar Beach].

“While I was appalled then, it seems that that sale was a just drop in the ocean.”

A statement from Family and Community Services outlined the social housing being delivered across NSW in future years did not detail any projects undertaken in Newcastle since 2011.

“The Communities Plus program will deliver up to 23,500 social and affordable housing dwellings and up to 40,000 private homes over the 10 years across NSW,” a FACS spokesperson said.

“This is the biggest social housing building program in the country, delivering more and better housing for tenants and NSW families on the waiting list.

“The NSW Government is also increasing the supply of social and affordable housing through a record $1.1 billion in seed funding for the Social and Affordable Housing Fund (SAHF), with a target of delivering 3,400 new social and affordable dwellings.

“This includes over 400 dwellings anticipated in the Newcastle and Hunter regions.”

What's most galling is the stealthy way these filthy dictators are doing it with very little publicity. It's their way of meeting their privatisation agenda without the electorate noticing anything. They know full well that voters hate privatisation. This way they are hoping to sneakily condition the electorate to accept shrinking government service levels long term. They don't care if they are getting pathetic fire sale prices for assets that are not theirs too sell, as long as their ideology is met.
It's really a continuation of what that despot Nick Greiner wanted to do from the get go all the way back in March, 1988, but was prevented from doing it as quickly as he wanted due to voter resistance.
NSW, the state that embraces mediocrity.
