Stores are private property that you enter by invitation, the store is able to revoke said invitation and ask you to leave for almost any reason.

My freezer has been looking more than a bit bare since I defrosted it a few days ago, so today I decided to look for some stuff to refill it with. There's a Coles and two Woolworths at one of the shopping centres near me, so plenty of choice.

I bought a few things from Coles and the first Woolworths, spending just over $10. Then I went to the second Woolworths - and spent a massive $32. I ended up leaving there with two jam-packed cooler bags of meat (score!, even though there was no steak) and assorted frozen food...

(Oh well, at least the freezer's just about full again...)

I find that sausage rolls, pies, and yogurt are better from Aldi.
I can't stand the local IGA store, the store owners are constantly eyeing on you giving that look of "you better buy something or get out".

NOT IGA!

Why?
They prevented us from having local shops in our suburb.
Ho? Badly worded petitions. Misleading use of the name of a local community group's name so the public thought the community group was against the shops.
We had a good shopping centre years ago, but it was "allowed" to slowly die. Ever since the site has resembled Downtown Beirut.

I shop at a shopping centre where there is an independant fruit shop (Not, not independant as in IGA, but really indpendant), and Aldi and a Coles.
AND FREE PARKING.
I can enter the centre, make a mental note of the fruit shop's specials etc, drop into AlDI for a quick look, go to Coles to get what ALDI doesn't have, then drop into ALDI and the fruit shop on the way out.
It sounds time-consuming, but I would spend far more time at the local mall waiting for the shoppers who insist on driving the biggest TRUCK they can buy, trying to park thew bloody things!

Where do you live? I'd imagine that's the local IGA owner who's doing it, not the IGA collective.

For me it is Glengalla IGA as when I drive off the M80 ring road on my way home it is there. Mainly to pick up my booze after 12 months I discovered there was supermarket behind the bottlló. Just joking the staff are very friendly and my partner and myself now socialise with some of the staff. As for chasing a special I don't worry I just like the handy location also I don't bother with petrol coupons, why bother with my weekly $20 LPG purchase and top up with petrol. The rewards programme they have seems to work with the key tags once you get 2000 points you can get BBQ Meat Pack, 48 rolls of toilet paper or two fresh chooks. Or save the points as my partner and myself we share a common tag as we have cashed in on knife set, ceramic baking dish, electric razor, salt and pepper shakers (battery). Plus priced items for the tag only, Aldi is good for the pet food, biscuits and what ever she gets as I will not drive to Sunshine as I do enough KM's in the bus

In the past, I have been shopping at Woolworths, mainly because it has been the most convenient supermarket for me to go to. As I'm now living within easy reach of Woolworths, Coles, BiLo, Aldi and a SupaIGA, not to mention Harris Farm (for fruit and vegetables), this could change soon....

Does anyone know why Coles in Broadway NSW is being refurbished again? It was refurbished about 2- 3 years ago

Coles at Fairfield West, followed by Aldi in the same suburb and IGA in Canley Heights. Did a week of work experience at the first location as part of my TAFE course.

Umm. Either Coles or woollies cause they're very close to our fruit shop in Camden... But if I'm in Campnelltown its still either Coles or woollies as they're one ontop of another at campbelltown mall!.

But what I don't get is they're is 3 woolworths & 2 Coles in less than a KM. Woolworths is at Campbeltown mall, the market fair near hungry jacks/between Campbeltown mall and MacArthur square, and MacArthur square and a Coles at Campbeltown mall and MacArthur square...... WHY DO THEY NEED SO MANY SO CLOSE, so crazy but if they can pay for everything then that's fine

There must be a market for these shops to make them worthwhile.

Talking of saturation, there is a Coles and Aldi at Maroubra Junction. Just over 1 km away at Eastgardens there is Coles, Woolies, and IGA (ex Franklins). Less than 1 km along at Southpoint Hillsdale there is Coles and Woolies again, and about the same distance on, Woolies are building in Matraville.

Must be because there all between MacArthur station and Campbelltown station and that's 45sec-1min train journey's worth (if you get what I mean)

The saturation can actually be good for consumers, at least at the moment.

In my area, for example, Woolworths are now actually competing against themselves because there are a large number of stores in a fairly small area, which is forcing many of them to drop prices further than usual, in order to reduce wastage.

Whether it's sustainable in the long term remains to be seen, although in the short term it's a definite plus for impulse buyers like myself... 8)

If you go to the Watergardens shopping centre at Taylors Lakes in Melbourne, there are two Woolworths stores inside the same building.

And down the road in Sunshine there are two Woolies stores across the road from each other.

Seems like a good way of locking competitors out.

2 woollies next to each other... Now that's just plain stupid!!! Are they basically 2 stores or split over 2 stores.?

Chatswood has two Coles very close to each other, one in Westfield and the other down the road (I reckon about 200-300m away) in Chatswood Chase.
There's Aldi there as well but that's about it with the major chains.

Bondi Junction also has 2 Coles only a couple of hundred metres apart.

The original one didn't seem to have lost much business as a result of the new one.

Sunshine actually had a Coles in the main street (formerly Bi-Lo), which they closed. They were also given the option to assume the lease of the former Target store in Sunshine Plaza, but they refused so that section was redeveloped into a car park and a few mini major stores. After a slight downturn for a couple of years, the Aldi store that's now in the plaza (on the site of a former Franklins) seems to be doing reasonably well, as are the Asian grocery stores that are still in the main street.

So I'd say Coles actually locked themselves out there...

The one thing that seems a bit odd to me is that Baulkham Hills has a better selection of supermarkets than Castle Hill, which has a much larger shopping centre. Castle Hill has Coles (in Castle Towers) and a Supa IGA (in Castle Mall). Baulkham Hills has Coles, Woolworths and Aldi.

For a while after Bi Lo closed, there was a situation in Adelaide where the Tea Tree Plaza shopping centre had two Coles stores, and there was another Coles store in another shopping centre practically across the road. The original Coles remains in place, the second Coles in TTP became a Harris Scarfe, and the one across the road is now a Foodland.
