Been driving the 'rent's Touareg for the past 2 days and this morning I filled up the 100 litre tank.

I think I haven't even done 200km yet and I've already used 1/4 of the tank at about 17L/100km (city driving). It's unbelieveable how SLOW that car is..

I have got my VE Maloo down to 99.9 l/100km (on the computer) when having fun, but when doing a grand dad drive as a bet on a long trip in the NT on cruise got it down to 10.5 l/100km but very boring!!
When you own an big V8 fuel consumption who cares, grin factor is what it is all about!!

Andrew,

Quite good for the little diesel! We have a 1993 Fairmont sedan, 4 litre inline 6 with 4 speed auto. transmission.... avg. 12.5L/100km around town and out on a long trip that dips down to below 9L/100km!

My2010 Golf Mk 6 118tsi COmfortline

1.4L Petrol supercharged and turbo charged.

Fuel consumption? Depends on my right foot, being a twin charged engine it goes hard but rewards itself with fuel for doing so lol, However being only a 1.4 it also sips it when you want it to, urban drivin see's around the 7L/100k mark, stop start traffic (being manual) can see it hit 10 sometimes.

Freeway cruising at around 80 will see mid 5's per hundred and at 100 low -mid 6's /100k's.

I'm pretty impressed

My VX wagon does 9.6L/100km around town and is down to 7.2 highway.

I have a 2.4L 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer manual and it is always around the 7 L/100km mark around town and highway - it rarely changes (should have been a 6 speed to reduce highway rpm I reckon).

Stoney,

That's the little TSI TwinCharger engine - supercharger for low RPM and turbo for higher RPM! Guess who pioneered the supercharger/turbo combination on diesel engines??? Volvo Trucks did - on the early FL6 Supercharger..... so the technology is not so new, but in this case, it is as it is on a petrol engine!

peppe82,

My plan is to get a frugal Ford Fiesta ECOnetic - combined fuel economy of 3.7L/100km from a 40 litre tank of diesel averages out to be about 75mpg! But the killer is the price tag - $24990 for the ECOnetic - and you need to have it serviced by a dealer as it takes a special fuel saving synthetic diesel engine oil!

I don't know - I just put petrol into it when it gets low enough for the light on the gauge to come on.......

They have this shift light for "economy" - if you change gears when it says, it will take you 8 weeks to get to your local shops.

Get a Focus diesel instead.

Nice, but in Australia we don't use Gallons or Miles... so only the P in MPG makes sense to me.

That's the feeling I get when driving my '97 Astra; I've always felt it needs another gear when I'm revving along the highway doing 100km/h @ 2400rpm. Atleast it's slightly better now that it has 15' tires, as opposed to when it had the standard 14's :)

heres an excellent site to find out what your fuel consumption is http://www.guycroft.clara.net/utils/mpgfromk.html

It turns out after getting 615km out of 50 litres of fuel, I get approximately 8.1L per 100km, or 12.3 km per litre.

Like I said, I need another gear for the highway; which is basically where I do most of my driving.

Mosta mine are V8's mate - who cares... you can't own a V8 if you are worried about the price of petrol :)

However if I run Premium the EB Boss V8 does 9.6l/100k on a trip, and 11.8l/100k around town.
On E10 it does 10.5l/100k on a trip and 13.8 - 15.4l/100k around town. Better to pay more for Premium!

The 350 Chev costs me about $45 bucks Bris to Warwick, where-as 550cc Suzuki Swift costs $9 bucks, and I look a lot better in the Chev than I do in a zook.

The Lancer does 3,000rpm at 110 on speedo - too much! Mind you, it still gets low 7s on highway even at that rev count.

Thats why they call 4 cyl cars a buzzbox. The large cars from Ford and Holden don't need to rev nearly as much to get the same result. They will always use more fuel doing it though ,simply because there is more mass involved.
The gap is narrowing though. :)

Reports from my recent trip to Stockton Beach:

1999 HiLux 4WD 2700i dual cab ute:
Down: 380km on 43.77 litres of fuel - 8.7L/100km
Around: 150km on 40 litres of fuel - 3.75L/100km
Home: 380km on 40 litres of fuel - 9.5L/100km

These figures were obtained using BP Ultimate 98RON Premium Unleaded petrol and nothing under 2800 - 3000rpm on the open road!

There's something wrong with your middle report, or something wrong with your car if the figures are right!

I currently have a 2009 Camry Ateva for work vehicle - 2.4L engine and 5spd auto. Always Caltex E10 sheeeet (only fuel that is approved for use by my employer).

I give it a boot and can't get it to go over 10.5L/100km (9.5km/L) around town. On highway it is low 7s/high 6s (~14km/L).

It appears you have confused L/100km with km/L.

380 km with 43.77 L of fuel = 11.5L/100km

150km with 40L of fuel = 26.7L/100km - very high for a 4 cyl car (on sand in 4WD must use heaps of fuel!)

380km with 40L of fuel = 10.5L/100km

I personally believe that km/L is a better indicator of fuel usage, hwoever, the Government and car manufacturers/magazines/punters are hooked on L/100km for some reason.

05 Honda CRV 10.8L/100km in urban driving about 8L/100km on the highway, used to be better when it was on standard 91.
06 Mazda 2 6.9L/100km in urban and about the same on the highway, about mid sixes usually.

In my 1996 Holden VS Series II Commodore I get 10.5 litres per 100 kilometers from regular bog standard unleaded, the same from the much vaunted premium fuels, and 15.4 per 100 from E10. I filled the car up with it one day to see how it went. I didn't do it again.
