New Trains for the Elizabeth Line

While on holiday in London in June 2017 I had the opportunity to travel in one of the new trains built for the new Elizabeth line. Originally called Cross Rail, when completed it will extend for 118km across London from Reading in the West, with a branch to Heathrow Airport, to Shenfield, with a branch under the Thames to Abbey Wood. It will cross London via twin tunnels 21klm long. There will be interchanges with other existing stations which are being upgraded.
The track is standard gauge in 6.2 metre tunnels with overhead 25Kv 50 Hz AC supply. The 66 trains are being built by Bombardier at their Derby works and the contract covers supply and maintenance at a new depot at Old Oak Common. These are class 345 trains which have a capacity of 1500 passengers. The photos were taken on the section of line from Liverpool Street to Shenfield , which is called TFL Rail at present, which opened on 22 June 2017. The existing train are 7 cars to fit the present platforms at Liverpool Street but 9 car trains will be used when the Paddington to Heathrow section is opened in May 2018 and the full fleet of 66 will operate when the Elizabeth Line opens in 2019.
