[USA][WA] Seattle Selection

Post by tramfan70 »

Seattle is a public transport enthusiasts dream. The number of transport modes and methods is amazing. Bus(Diesel and Trolley), Streetcar(Tram), Light Rail, Heavy Rail, Monorail and Ferry. Due to time limitations this visit it was not possible to see much but a selection is here. Repeat visit required.

The first re-introduction of Streetcars in Seattle was the Waterfront Street Car (Route 99) using 5 Melbourne W2 trams. The operation lasted from 29/05/1982 to 18/11/2005. During 1995 I did ride the Streetcar. Serving 9 stops 5 are now removed. The majority of the route was adjacent to the Waterfront. This photo is a small section of the line since cut off and pulled up in places. The new (2016) First Hill Streetcar commences at Occidental Avenue one of the old routes stops.

Demolished in 2011 the Pike Place Station name plate is still mounted on a support for the Alaskan Way Viaduct above which is in the process of being replaced by a road tunnel. All track work for Pike Place Station has been covered over by parking.

The second Streetcar line built is the South Lake Union Streetcar. It operates from Downtown Seattle to South Lake Union a distance of 4.2km (11 Stops). It uses 3 Inekon (Czech) Trio Trams. This car is at the Westlake Hub Terminal (McGraw Square).

A transport tunnel in Seattle serves certain bus routes and the sole Light Rail line. There are 5 stations. Originally built as bus only (Trolley Buses also) with tracks included for future light rail. Opened in 1990 closed from 2005-2007 and re-opened late 2007 after floor was lowered for the new Light Rail and overhead Trolley Wires removed. This is Westlake Station (Southbound platform).
