V Shaped airports

Post by eddy »

This is interesting a V shaped airfield like I was suggesting at Mascot http://www.marinecorpstimes.com/article ... an-airbase
Note the dedicated take off and landing.

The expert panel found that a V-shape runway would enable takeoffs and landings mostly over water, so aircraft won't have to fly directly over nearby communities. That would reduce noise impact and wouldn't restrict local development. The V-shaped airfield would require filling 395 acres of coastal waters, disrupting 17 acres of coral and the loss of an existing beach at Camp Schwab, the report states.

"From the original concept, the V-shaped runway was agreed upon," Commandant Gen. James Conway told reporters at an Aug. 24 Pentagon briefing. "In terms of absolute aircraft safety, we still believe that that is the best way to do things."

Generally speaking, a V-shape runway offers added safety in that there are two distinct runways, one assigned for takeoffs and one for landings.

I had read somewhere else that less ground plane accidents happen if the planes go from one airstrip to the other at one end of the runway.
